Fun, fun, fun!

Every child I know - my students, my children, my nieces and nephews - loves this book. The repetive refrain is perfect for beginning readers and the rhythm of the language engages young readers immediately. Your child will want to hear the story over and over. Non-readers will make up their own story but the refrain is easy and fun for them to remember and "read".

In this title, Patricia Hubbard uses rhythm and fun to introduce colors. Children are quickly reciting the repetitive refrains with smiles on their faces as this book is introduced. G. Brian Karas' illustrations are colorful and imaginative providing good visualizations to Hubbard's imaginative, colorful ideas. The book uses a familiar crayon box to describe things that can be seen or drawn with each color. Preschoolers through beginning elementary school children love this book!

About the Author
OMNEC ONEC was born on a higher level of density on the planet Venus called the astral plane. She came to Earth with her own physical body in 1955. In the Nineties, Omnec became publicly known with her autobiography "From Venus I Came" (today part 1 of "The Venusian Trilogy"). This unique “autobiography of an extraterrestrial” was first published by the UFO investigator and US Air Force Colonel Wendelle C. Stevens in 1991 in the USA. In this book, Omnec portrays the life on the astral level of Venus and describes how she was born there and why as a child she was given the opportunity to lower her vibrations, to manifest a physical body and to come to Earth at the age of seven in order to later in her life work as a spiritual teacher and fulfill her life cycles on Earth. It is Omnec’s mission to share her spiritual knowledge and unconditional love with the people on Earth and to help raising the human consciousness. ANJA SCHÄFER has been supporting Omnec Onec’s mission since 1997. As her close friend and assistant, she helps Omnec to share her message of unconditional love and brotherhood among the people on Earth.

Repetitive read.

The book was repetitive throughout especially towards the end. It is an interesting story from one woman’s perspective though it is much of a stretch. If you take it as a book written by someone who is highly imaginative then it is an interesting read. There are 2 authors in this book, but the main author peppers in some interesting theories. For example, her take on Jesus-( was half ET) would be a stretch for anyone very religiously inclined; although it would be tit for tat for those who are not. As a science fiction story- it probably would make an interesting movie. I did not give it more stars because it was written more as a hodge-podge than a thoughtful written book

About the Author
The owner and creator of Middle School Novel Units is a middle school language arts teacher who was born to teach! My love of learning and my dream to teach began in 1971 on my first day of kindergarten. I grew up “playing school” every weekend in my grandma’s basement. My desire to teach never wavered through the years and finally became a reality with encouragement of my husband to attend college during the years that I stayed at home raising our 4 children. I graduated from the University of South Florida in 2005 and have been happily teaching ever since. Through teaching, I discovered a love of writing curriculum. I wrote my first complete novel unit in 2008. Middle School Novel Units Inc. has been in business since June of 2011. So far I have not been pleased with the two novel kits from this publisher

I would say this is one helpful piece in making a complete literature and grammar unit, but is not such on its own. There aren't nearly enough text-dependent questions (one every few chapters), and the grammar and literature elements don't seem to fit the specific chapters. They appear to be random. So far I have not been pleased with the two novel kits from this publisher.

In 2010 the U.S. Army Special Operations Command created Cultural Support Teams, a pilot program to put women on the battlefield alongside Army Rangers, Green Berets, Navy SEALs, and other special operations teams on sensitive missions in Afghanistan. The idea was that women could access places and people that had remained out of reach and could build relationships—woman to woman—in ways that male soldiers in a conservative, traditional country could not. I am usually not into writing negative reviews. I am an Army Veteran and admire the female soldiers in this story. I admire their strengths and ability to pioneer and tough out a difficult and dangerous mission. My problem is w/ the writer. Almost every page dwells of physical strengths of these soldiers....ie: how many push ups, miles run etc. That portion of their training needs to be told but enough already. Not much or no time is spent on their cerebral skills, problem solving, Afghan language skills, weapons skills, leadership and stress under fire abilities, etc. These soldiers have these skills...not fair to them to cut that portion so short and just highlite their abilities as if they are just "Gym Rats"
And totally missing are the details of their missions. All I get is instructions to Afghan women and children is: "Go hide in the corner...You are safe now" or expecting an Afghan woman, straight away to rat on her Taliban husband.
This story should have been written by a competent combat writer, female or male not important. Again, I admire the female soldiers and their story, and especially Ashley White and her family and the wonderful legacy they continue to keep alive. Well Done!

Good factual account, emotionally unsatisfying

This book tells the story of women serving alongside Special Operations Forces in Afghanistan, as part of a group known as Cultural Support Teams. Focusing on one particular class of women to graduate from the training program, it provides a strong, factual account of their selection, training, and deployment alongside the Army Rangers in Afghanistan. In particular, it relates the individual story of one of these soldiers, Ashley White - her background, why she signed on for the program, and what happened to her on her deployment.

The book's strength is its factual data - why the military needed this program, who these women were, and what experiences they had. However, the book is emotionally flat. I finished it with a sense that there was more I could have learned about how these women faced the stress of combat, how the Rangers they supported were affected by their presence, and whether the military leadership's position on women in combat was truly changed by the exceptional performance of this group, or simply bowed to growing societal pressures.

A gripping story that reads like a real-life GI Jane

I just finished Ashley's War in one VERY late night. It is gripping and reads like an action thriller. From the "omg, captain obvious moment" at the beginning of the book that set up the reason why we needed women on the front lines in Afghanistan (half the population in a conservative Muslim country had valuable intelligence and yet wouldn't talk to male soldiers) to the call-to-serve and women's backstories to the front line action when they were deployed, this book never lost its momentum.

I could not recommend it more highly.

The Greatest Coach Ever.

This is the best written non-fiction book on earth. Any basketball player who wants to improve their game towards a championship level, this book is for you.
But if you want to become basketball trash and learn nothing about basketball fundamentals, then this book is not for you.

About the Author
Bobby Fischer (March 9, 1943 – January 17, 2008) is regarded as the greatest chess player the world has ever known. He won the US Open Championship at age 13, the US Championship at age 14, became a grandmaster and a candidate for the World Chess Championship at age 15, and defeated Boris Spassky in an epic battle for the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1972. In this book, he describes and fully annotates his battles on the way to the top. This book is widely regarded as the best chess book ever written.

A suppressed masterpiece.

Readers should be aware that there have been several editions of this book. In its original form, in descriptive notation and with Fischer's own annotations, it was very well received indeed, earning high praise from many top players and chess writers. It was also voted the best chess book in any category by the readers of the British Chess Magazine, and I'm sure by others.
Unfortunately, when it was later re-edited and issued in an algebraic edition, something happened to Fischer's original annotations. The editors apparently 'revised' them, and the effect was - as Fischer vehemently complained in a recent radio interview - to make him look like "a patzer." He claims that the new annotations are riddled with errors and could never have come from his hand.
Since 'My 60 Memorable Games' is as about important to students of chess as Shakespeare's plays are to students of literature, it would be nice to be able to tell readers to avoid the mutilated algebraic edition and to make sure they get a reprint of the earlier and untampered-with edition of the book. Unhappily neither edition appears to be available. Both have been allowed to go out of print and remain out of print.
One is left wondering just who is keeping this masterpiece off the market. And why...?

The Book and I

Hm...

When I first decided on aquiring this literary masterpiece, I was quite under the impression that there would be a higher annotation:move ratio. I was wrong, but perhaps that is a good thing.

There is a plethora of chess enlightenment within the pages. Knowledge isn't spoon-fed to you, as in many lower-level books, but there are excellent annotations which let us peek into the mind of a chess legend. A chess legend whom, if you are reading this page, you probably adore.

The games are ones which Bobby Fischer considers memorable, so therefore they must be pretty great, right? They are!

Still, as I mentioned, the annotations aren't spoon-fed to you, so you won't be getting anything out of simply playing over the moves really quickly and glancing at the annotations. You actually have to sit in front of Fischer's opponent and contemplate the moves through Fischer's eyes.

C.S.Purdy once said,"If the student forces himself to examine all moves that smite, however absurd they may look at first glance, he is on the way to becoming a master of tactics."

I quote him, because, a lot of Fischer's moves come out of nowhere. When going over Bobby's games in endeavor to guess which move comes next, calculating the bizarre moves is beneficial.

It's an excellent book if you are a dedicated chess player. Casual chess players won't get nearly as much out of it. In other words, if chess is your hobby, you won't get as much out of it. If chess is your life, then stop reading customer reviews, and just go ahead and purchase the book!

Reading this book made me a fan!

First I would like to state this is not the infamous 1995 Batsford release that infuriated Bobby Fischer. This 2009 copy puts all that scandal in the past and lets a new generation enjoy this great book in the language spoken by most players algerbraic notation. The previous alterations in the 1995 edition have been omitted making this a faithful reproduction of a great work. Mostly grammatical errors and misspellings have been corrected. I happen to own this book and compared it to with the alterations stated by Mr. Winter in his article Fischer's Fury and this new issue holds true. Only one alteration was made that is the game Fischer - Tal Candidates Tournament 1959. Fischer in his original book gives (50.....Ba1 when Bobby could have won with 51. Rc8+) instead the correct move made actually in the game 50....Kc7. Fischer in a interview for a chess magazine states at the last minute before the book hit the printing press he caught the error, he attached a note but fell off. Making this an updated copy.

Before reading this book I disdained studying any Fischer games because I believed he couldn't have been a good player for dropping out of competitive chess. Reading this book completely changed my opinion now I consider him my favorite chess player of all time. What makes this game collection so good it was written by Fischer himself. No chess writer can give you a better insight than the man who actually played the games. Fischer's commentary to his games is refreshing bringing his games to life with humor, brutal honesty and humbleness often stating where he made mistakes and could have played better. It shows Bobby's genius to remember the emotional and phycological ups and downs to his games played years before henceforth the title. You also cant beat the annotations they come strait from the mind of one of history's greatest chess artist. You wont be bored here Fisher gives a healthy amount of notes usually at key moments in the games as opposed to other chess writers who leave the reader confused with an extreme amount of notes with no value. Fischer's games are absolutley beautiful I doubt there are many readers who will disagree. This is a must have for any chess reader with any amount of good taste.

About the Author
Stephanie Harvey has spent her career teaching and learning about reading and writing. After fifteen years of public school teaching, both in regular education and special education classrooms, Stephanie worked for twelve years as a staff developer for the Denver based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), a partnership of leaders from education and business, who support innovation in public schools. Insatiably curious about student thinking, she is a teacher first and foremost and currently serves as a private literacy consultant to schools and school districts. In that role, she conducts keynote speeches, presentations, workshops, demonstration lessons, coaching sessions and ongoing consultation to teachers, reading specialists, literacy coaches, principals and district administrators. With a focus on K-12 literacy, her specialties include comprehension instruction, inquiry-based learning, content area reading and writing, nonfiction literacy, and the role of passion, wonder and engagement in teaching and learning. Every teacher should read this book. If you have read the first one, the information is basically the same, but it has more comprehension and collaboration lessons in it. I highly recommend this book for every teacher from K-college!!
