About the Author
W. Timothy Coombs (PhD, Public Affairs and Issues Management, Purdue University) is a professor in the Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida. His books include Applied Crisis Communication and Crisis Management: Cases and Exercises, Code Red in the Boardroom,and, with Sherry Holladay, Managing Corporate Social Responsibility, PR Strategy and Application, and The Handbook of Crisis Communication. His crisis communication research was awarded the 2002 Jackson, Jackson & Wagner Behavioral Science Prize from the Public Relations Society of America. Dr. Coombs has published more than 40 research articles, most focusing on crisis communication, as well as more than 30 book chapters on the subject. He has worked with consulting firms in the U.S. and Europe on ways to improve crisis communication efforts for their clients, and has been invited by governments and businesses around the world to present his ideas and insights into crisis communication.

The best guide to crisis management

As both a student and professional of crisis management and communication, I have read countless articles and books on the topic. After a while, they all start to sound alike, and you can begin to wonder whether there's really anything new and insightful out there.
This book is it.
The author compiles research from a vast number of fields, as well as adding some of his own analysis resulting from a distinguished professional and academic career. The final product is the best "holistic" guide to crisis management I've ever read. Although it is a slim volume, it took me a couple of weeks to read, take notes, and reflect on the contents--it's that densely packed with ideas and information.
I personally found that it re-sparked my excitement and enthusiasm for this complex, challenging field.

My favorite crisis management reference so far

In the past six months I've read a few books on crisis management and this is my favorite. Coombs put together a concise book that is well organized, easy to read, and brimming with useful information. He used the three-phase (pre-crisis, crisis, post-crisis) model as a foundation after comparing it with other more robust models.
Because this was published recently (2012), the examples were current and memorable. As much as I dig the Tylenol/cyanide case study, it's nice to learn from events that have happened in the past few years.
I originally purchased this as a required text for graduate school but have used it as much, if not more, at work in building a crisis management plan from scratch. For someone who needs a grip on the basics, this is an appropriate tool. For a person with extensive crisis management experience, it may fall short of expectations.

This book was a great book for information on crisis management which I had to do a presentation on. It was neatly organized and super understandable. It was easy to read not like some text books! I think this would be a great book for teaching students!!
