He reflecting us

Primo Levi, Italian Jew, survivor of Auschwitz, author of "The Periodic Table" (21 stories each connected by a chemical element to tale), died at the age of 68. The official record has it that his fall from his three-storied apartment was a suicide. Some of his friends believed he killed himself others were convinced that he had already died 40 years before in Auschwitz. His life and death are relevant to those who enjoy his written work because they were pieces that aligned with the stories he wrote and the thoughts that he mused in his essays. Primo Levi was a writer whose thoughts drill into the deepest depths of intellectual darkness to, as he described his own approach in "Translating Kafka" (one of the essays in The Mirror Maker) to light. Yet somehow, reading his stories and essays, we might find it difficult to separate the emotions that drove him this way and that from the clarity of his analysis of life. His was a difficult mind to access and comprehend, but he was a writer of clarity and brilliance. It is this kind of admixture that makes writers like Primo Levi so fascinating. The stories and essays in "The Mirror Maker" were all very short, very clear and scarily thought provoking. My favourite essays from this collection were "Translating Kafka" and "Bacteria Roulette", and of the stories, "They were made to be Together" and "Through the Walls". The reader will find his work a mirror reflecting aspects of Primo Levi's life as well as his own; and we should understand that the paths life has for each of us are more myriad than the Cretan Labyrinths of the Minotaur. We must not only feel our way out but also think our way out. After all, as the author wrote (in "The Moon and the Man") that man is strong because "of the many weapons nature offered the animals, he opted for the brain".

hilariously insightful; primo levi doesn't usually strike across as a fantasy writer, nonetheless, his un-apologetic personality comes through these intricate stories, written to reflect various avenue in the nature of human beings.

At the moment I don't recall these stories. I just read everything by or about Primo Levi because I believe he is one of the most moral and ethical men I have ever heard of. He led both an
ordinary life as an industrial chemist and an extrodinary life as a victim of the Nazi death camps,
and still managed to maintain a balanced view of humanity. He lived an exempilary life and died tragically. He is an inspiration.

About the Author

Dr. Brian Matsumoto is a retired research scientist who has worked for 30 years documenting experiments with technologically advanced cameras. He now spends his time photographing with a variety of cameras and lenses, and enjoys expanding a camera's potential by pairing it with specialized optics such as microscopes and telescopes. He enjoys spending time outdoors and carries his camera on all of his hikes to photograph nature.In addition to the seven books he has written for Rocky Nook, Dr. Matsumoto has published several articles and has had his photographs published in numerous periodicals. His photographs have also appeared on the covers of American Laboratory, BioTechniques, and BioPhotonics. He is experienced in the technical aspects of photography and has taught courses on recording scientific experiments with digital cameras. Dr. Matsumoto recently served as a judge for the Olympus BioScapes International Digital Imaging Competition.

Carol F. Roullard has been an avid photographer since her high school years, where she first experimented with black-and-white artistic composition. Since then, she has continued photographing mainly nature and architecture. Another disappointing guide book

Sorry to have to say that in my opinion this book lets down the audience it specifically claims to target - the stills photographer wanting to learn how to use the GH4 as a video tool. Why is it that time and time again "missing manual" genre camera guidebooks spend endless time drivelling on either about photography 101 basics (aperture/shutter speed duh) or else ridiculous in camera "special effects" super auto picture features etc etc. Is there some set of master templates somewhere that these guys just duplicate every time a new model comes out? Any competent photographer buying this camera, even if unfamiliar with Panny menu layouts will find their way round basic stills shooting in 5 minutes or doing custom white balance etc in 10 minutes without any need for reading anything. The first half of this book is basically a waste of time for the stills to video convertee. Several remaining chapters are of little use - customising buttons and menus is clearly regarded as highly advanced - its 3/4 the way through ; it should be in the introducion. Its followed by a chapter on flash!!!! No mention of on camera lighting for video etc. LOts of redundant information on auto features when manual is the only sane way to shoot video ...Recommending Cine D or V for shooting video is dumb, and there is no No mention of how to shoot in 4k and downsize to HD ( probably one of the best options for quality footage for video newbies) and well.... one could go on and on. This book is for abject beginners and will teach you almost nothing about video assuming you know yer jpegs from yer raw already. It also bizarrely contains sections on spotting scopes and microscopes but nothing on advanced video lensing eg anamorphics.

I personally would recommend two sources for the stills literate buyer of the GH4 trying to master its video features, 1/ Caleb's newly released video training which although 3x the price of this book is ten times more valuable( DSLR shooter) and Andrew Reid's E-Book (EOHSD.com) although Reid is way more cine oriented and has some excellent information that might perhaps be too moviemaker oriented for some.

Having got that off my chest I suppose the book would be helpful for photographic newbies to complement the limited Panasonic manuals, but I have no idea why a neophyte would buy a GH4 in the first place. Its a killer camera for advanced amateurs /video enthusiasts and students of cinematography and of course many pros are using it as a B camera or even their A machine depending on shooting circumstances. New users might be better buying a used a GH3 ( going cheap now) and see how they like it, then when ready for the advanced video features on the GH4 ie 4k etc go for the upgrade. The learning curve from the GH3>GH4 is all about video - when you are ready.

Buy the book, buy the camera!

The authors have a clear, well thought out style of writing that makes the subject matter as easy to understand as possible. Let's face it, the GH4 is a complicated camera, but there's no reason a beginner shouldn't buy one and grow into it. To my way of thinking, that actually makes more sense than buying a simple camera and then trading up or buying a succession of more and more capable cameras. That way, you no sooner get familiar with a camera then you're ready to get a new one. Why not just get a camera that will do the job and stick with it for a while?

This book gives you the knowledge you need, step by step, to start using the camera effectively right out of the box, and then to start using the more advanced still and video modes. Frankly it will take study and practice, but eventually familiarity will come. The authors point out that there are two or three ways of changing practically every setting on the camera, and you should work out which ones you are personally most comfortable with. Once you've done that, and gotten some practice with using different capabilities, it's time to start customizing the controls to suit your usage. Otherwise, you'll be resetting the controls over and over as you learn new stuff.

Dr. Matsumoto's background is similar to mine, so maybe we think alike. But I couldn't imagine a better guide for the amateur photographer.

A (mostly) good reference guide for the GH4

I purchased the authors' book for the GH3, and find this book to be of similar caliber. The GH4 is a complex camera, and the manual provided by Panasonic is OK, but not comprehensive. This book goes into far more detail, and in most cases, explains many features that the Panasonic manual falls short with. I don't think every bit of information is entirely accurate, but for the most part, the book delivers much more than the owner manual.

The authors don't appear to have extensive knowledge of video. Based on my experience shooting video on the GH4, some of their feature descriptions are inaccurate. The book is more useful for people shooting photos, but I believe the GH4's popularity is largely due to its outstanding video capabilities. Thus, I can't give the book 5 stars, as the video content falls a bit short. BTW, the book contains no info on VLOG, as that feature was added to the GH4 after the book was published.

All things considered, I recommend this book as a supplement to the Panasonic owner manual. Of course, you can wade through the multitude of conflicting opinions ("facts" as some would believe) on many internet web sites and forums to glean information about the GH4. BTW, there are a couple Facebook GH4-specific groups. I think this book will set you straight on the majority of important details, and serve as a reference manual.

Really good conclusion to the series

Lastland was a book that could have gone so many ways - there were so many paths that were possible for this story to take. And for all I imagined, I couldn't predict how good this would be. My worry at the end of Monarch was unsubstantiated. This book delivered more than promised and kept me hanging on each word. The story starts off with Kat chasing down the Western forces to retrieve Rune, and after success, she and Varion team up to take out Raserion for once and for all. The biggest motivator for Kat is, of course, the threat that he poses to Haven and so, even though she doesn't trust Varion entirely, she allies with him to seek peace for her Haven.

The war rages on about the middle of the book and that's where the pace drops. It's all strategy for a while, and was about to start getting boring, when we move towards the main showdown. Kat goes above and beyond her powers, and I was honestly terrified what turn the book would take. The writing painted a very vivid image of war - and when we reach Haven, it goes to newer heights. The ending was, unexpected, to say the least. It was a good resolution to the story and honestly, very well deserved towards our characters. It also settles the world really well, and gives hope for a happily ever after, just slightly marred by remnants of war.

As for this series, it has been a delight. It has been unexpected and surprising, but in a good way. It kept me engaged and hooked, and I have devoured each of them until my eyes hurt from lack of sleep. (Which means it was that awesome) It was such a good start to the year for me, and the world-building, characters, and storyline have been nearly flawless. The romance was also, finally, given it's due - still in the background, but with a better understanding of Rune. Kat is still drawn to wounded people, but perhaps that her real nature - to see the whole of people and kindle hope in them. Just amazing, in short.

It offered a wonderful resolution for our characters and the world they inhabit

With Prince Varion, ruler of the Northern Kingdom, "reclaiming" his place, he is determined to end the war that has divided Lastland for 700 years. While Katelyn is torn as she tries to reconcile the boy she knew with the prince before her, she knows that Haven's future and that of Lastland hangs in trusting Prince Varion.

First, she must save Rune. Will saving him rid him of the Gateling that still clings to his body? Will Katelyn reach Haven in time to save the people? Will she try to burn to brightly and snuff her own light out?

This book is very battle heavy, but what would one expect? I can say that it didn't detract at all from the story for me personally. This final book in the story was perfection. It offered a wonderful resolution for our characters and the world they inhabit. It was nice to see everything wrapped up nicely with a few surprises that didn't disappoint.

The series as a whole is one of the best I've ever read, and I couldn't possibly recommend these books more highly.

Exciting and satisfiying conclusion to a great series.

I always struggle trying to write a review for later book in a series. I figure those who haven't read any of the books yet would be checking out the first in the series to see if it appeals to them, and those who have read and enjoyed the others in the series are already likely to pick up the next one. I also try to avoid spoilers, and it's difficult to avoid spoilers for previous books.

What readers who have not yet read these books may want to know is if the subsequent books are as good as the first, and if the ending is satisfying. It's so disappointing to invest in a series only to be let down and feel disappointed in the end. In my opinion each book in this series becomes better, and those who enjoy the first should enjoy the rest and feel the ending satisfying, as I did.

I found the story to be very imaginative and unique, it fits best I think as Young Adult Fantasy, but isn't simply a cookie-cutter story. There's adventure, danger, power struggles, deceptions, twists, and a dash of romance.

Finishing this book I felt that bittersweet feeling familiar to readers of coming to the end of time spent with characters who came to feel like good friends.

In "Lastland" Kat remains loyal to her friends, and stubbornly true to her goal to protect her beloved homeland of Haven, no matter what is thrown in her way. And quite a bit conspires to try to stop her. Although she has grown in confidence and experience she remains still believable as a real person, with doubts, fears, struggles to do what is best and right. I liked her quite a bit. I also appreciated the fact that although there is a romantic aspect in the story it never takes over the story, never derails the plot or becomes too much the focus, but rather is seasoning to add flavor.

I am so glad I discovered this series, enjoyed it immensely. And I look forward to seeing what else this author comes up with in the future.

Alright

Have the author as the professor for my law school class. Explains the law in a succinct manner and liked the way the professor used the book in the class. I'm unsure as it how it would stand on its own though, without the accompanying text book, but its purpose for the class was just a supplement. One way to improve is to have "sample answers" to the scenarios or at least an outline of the answers to the questions presented. Overall, its a pretty good reference and I will probably end up keeping it instead of selling it back to the book store.
