Improved and Expanded 9th Edition

Now in its ninth edition, this book has become the standard of the field. It is intended to help those whose job it is to facilitate the career development process. This includes school, employment, career and rehabilitation counselors as well as other individuals who are influential in the career development process.

The ninth edition has improvements in virtually all areas, the most important of which is that it now meets all Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards. Another area that has been expanded is the concept of a career that changes from time to time in the workers life. Based on chaos theory, this realizes that the outlook for particular jobs, particular careers change from time to time and in unpredictable ways.

The strengths that this book brings to the subject in the form of the writing style and intellectual depth of the author remain; making this book both educational and entertaining.

Timely and relevantly updated for today's career issues

This edition of Dr. Brown's textbook is a great one for students. He has added introductions and reviews to the beginnings and ends of each chapter, helping the student clarify the pertinent information. This gives the book a much more focused readability, especially for those learning the material for the first time.

Especially important for practicing counselors is the new section on Labor Market trends and issues. Additionally helpful is the section on interventions used by career counselors.

I like Dr. Brown's comprehensive understanding of what career means to all people - not just the college-bound or college-educated. His focus on alternative careers and alternative educational pathways create a framework for counselors to use with clients of all types.

Additionally, I especially like his counseling the reader to think of their own theory, and how to use values-based, multi-cultural counseling as a model for clients. He is clearly sensitive to the needs of all people who endeavor to enter the world of work.

Different looks at the iconic investor

These are various profiles of Warren Buffett "The Oracle of Omaha" that appeared over the years in Forbes Magazine. Together, they paint a picture of how Buffett, with deceptive simplicity, became of the the world's wealthiest man, and more interestingly, his attitude to wealth and how he decided to disburse his wealth philanthropically and bring his children into the process.

My only complaint about the book is that it is too short--the 117 pages went by so quickly, I had to re-read the book. These are portraits you don't see in the papers every day, and the ones about his children are especially interesting. This is an amazing insight into a uniquely American family and a uniquely American success story.

Short, But Very Sweet

This is a real short, short story. I've read a couple in this particular
series and I really wish they were all in one book.

This one is Deborah and James' "after" story. They met 50 years
previously and were very much in love. James goes to war and is captured
and held for a couple of years. Meanwhile, Deborah was informed of his
death and moves on to marry and raise a family. When James returns home, he
finds a new love of his own and marries and has a family.

They meet again at the wedding of their respective grandchildren. And
both of their spouses have passed away.

So here's a second chance for both of them. Is the love still within them?

I like the very easy love stories. The characters are so sweet and loving.

Again, I wish all the stories were in one volume.

A wonderful piece written from the heart to the heart

James and Deborah have found each other almost 50 years later. They have lived lives with other spouses, have grandchildren, and are now living in a retirement community.

Seeing each other for the first time after five decades, it seems as if no time has gone by at all. Their love and connection is just as strong as the first night they met.

A sweet continuation to "Meet Me In Abilene," "You Make Me Smile" is a moving and heartwarming short story of the first date James and Deborah have upon re-meeting. It is a sweet story that adds further depth to the characters and leaves the reader wanting to know more, learn more, hear their stories, and to have a novel that will tell the continuation of their present story.

A wonderful short piece that is written from the heart for the readers heart.

About the Author

Harry A. Kinnison, Ph.D., worked for the Boeing Company for 20 years, 10 as a specialist in the Maintenance and Ground Operations Systems Group of the Customer Services Organization. Specifically, he represented Boeing to airlines on the ETOPS (extended-range twin-engine operations) program, participated in airline maintenance evaluations, and helped airlines develop reliability programs. Since his retirement from Boeing in 2000, Dr. Kinnison has taught aviation maintenance management courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Tariq Siddiqui received his degree, Master of Aeronautical Science with specialization in Aviation/Aerospace Safety Systems and Management Specialization from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Currently he is employed as manager of aircraft maintenance at a commercial airline. Terry is currently teaching on an adjunct basis at ERAU. Mr. Siddiqui started his aviation career with Pan-Am Airlines. He has over 20 years of experience in aviation maintenance, management, aviation project management, environmental regulations, and investigation incidents and accidents.

Every aspect of maintenance management in one book! Excellent and easy language too!

I had to prepare for an interview after graduation in Aeronautical ENGG. For the position of Planning Engineer in a reputable airline. My limited experience and knowledge in the maintenance management was bothering me and I was all over the Internet searching for books and short listed a no. Of books to buy. Then I came across this book and was amazed to see all information I wanted in one book! I decided to buy this and was worried about the time it will take to ship the book. Then I came across kindle for ipad and bought it right away and it's amazing and more efficient way to read a book! Very thanks to The author, Harry A Kinnison for this treasure! I would definitely recommend this to someone in my shoes or someone who wants to learn the big picture of aviation management !

back then it was eye opening and a good guide to see the whole picture

well I first read this book in 2010 when I was rather lacking experience on the operations and hangar maintenance side of the sector. back then it was eye opening and a good guide to see the whole picture. now after 4 years, 2 of which with hands on experience where I lacked earlier, I see that the information is brief and you may not find answers to all of your questions. still good guide. would be better if it also included whats going on on the other side of the Atlantic.

Amazon rent is probably the best place to get the books you need

Received this when I was in school. Amazon rent is probably the best place to get the books you need. Grant it they do not have all the books you will need but most of them they will. I was even able to find some that my instructors said that I may have an issue finding. Amazon rent saved me a ton of money and I recommend it for any and everyone in school. If you are going to be a little late on your return they can extend your rental for a low fee with out having to buy the book at full cost returning the books are easy as well. This in itself should inspire folks to get out there and get their degree.

A Gift to Education

Vajra Watson's book, Learning to Liberate: Community-Based Solutions to the Crisis in Urban Education, is a wonderful book to read for those involved in education. She provides four different perspectives of individuals that work within the community and their incredible, tireless dedication to improving the lives of the youth they work with. It gives great perspectives on how to not only connect with students that many educators struggle with, but to also engage them. It can be a challenge to work with and be able to teach students that come from so many diverse backgrounds that are different from your own. However, it shows that while you may not have all of the answers, there are those in the community you can reach out to that can provide the much needed support. It is very inspiring as to how much passion these individuals have for putting youth on the right track. They are able to set the bar very high. Dr. Watson captures their passion and illustrates their methodology very well throughout the book. Her time spent preparing this book shows just how committed she is to improving the lives of others. Not only will the featured communities benefit from their efforts, but the field of education and society as a whole can certainly learn from the advice given. Too many times educators lose hope, but we must not be so quick to judge the leaders of tomorrow as they can prove much more than we could have ever imagined.

A Beacon of Hope

Learning to Liberate was a required text in my critical pedagogy course this summer. I am extremely grateful that my professor chose to present us with this book!!! Some people may wonder, "What is the crisis in public education?" "How do I relate to the youth of today?" The answers to these questions can be found in Vajra Watson's Learning to Liberate. We hear constantly in the news, at conferences, and seminars that there is a problem in public education. A lot of finger pointing and blame shifting has occurred without positive results. While policies and government standards are created as a one-size fits all solution, they fail to address the individual life circumstances that many of our youth experience daily. On the contrary, Learning to Liberate is all about ACTION and acknowledges people that are "in the trenches" creating change in our communities. Watson's use of ethnographic portraiture takes the reader on a personal journey from one grassroots community organization to the next and she provides a detailed, heartfelt account of her interactions with four youth workers in California. Watson does an incredible job using words to create vivid imagery of her encounters and, as a result, I became emotionally invested in each chapter. This book reads like a novel and you get a real sense of Watson's desire to help misguided youth. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in education or looking to gain a deeper understanding about the environments that influence many of our youth. This book is a great investment for those who aim to liberate and empower youth from all walks of life!

I was Liberated

Leaning to Liberate was a great book. It was easy to read and I stayed engaged throughout each story. She allowed the reader to feel the passion, pain and triumph of each of the community leader and their students. Although they all practiced a different pedagogy, they all knew how to reach their students. They met them right where they were and figured how how to impact them when no one else could.

As a new teacher, I am learning that what and how I learned, was totally wrong. I learned that if I teach that way, I will be doing my students a disservice and I won't help them to get on the "freedom train."

Watson showed how poverty can easily start children down a path to destruction and there has to be someone willing to pull them out. She also pointed out how the schools are contributing to this crisis, but how teachers can help improve it.

While reading this book I went through an array of emotions. There were times I was sad, frustrated, angry, but when I finished, I was motivated. All of the leaders realized they could not reach all the children out there that needed their help, but they knew that there were kids out there they could help. That is the message that will ring loud throughout my teaching career. I will not be able to reach all my students, but I will stay motivated to reach as many as I can.
