Programs, tours and exhibits are the meat-and-potatoes of what most museums do to meet their missions to educate the public. Interpretation helps make small museums compelling so that the public understands that they are more than a repository of dusty objects. This book considers researching and designing exhibits and best practices for sharing the stories with your audiences. It explores how to orient your organization to be effective interpreters of what you collect, including how to tell engaging stories and how to address difficult issues you may have ignored in the past, like slavery, prejudice and privilege. For the non-historian, it also offers a step-by-step primer on good historical research.

The good and the meh.
By N. Schale
The good:
* This book is full of examples (photographs and illustrations) that are relevant to the message.
* Unlike many other books, you can actually see the 'point' of the before/after photographs.
* Kurt Lancaster covers beginner all the way through advance tips.
* If you are a canon fan, you will be reassured of picking the right team.
* The book reads smooth.
* I did not read the first edition, but this book is certainly up with the current times (as of Fall 2013)

The meh:
* I'm a veteran in the DSLR world and would like to have seen more advanced tips, but I DID learn a few things, certainly not a waste.
* You know that guy who name drops all the time... that is this book. There are a ton of stories from other cinematographers. Their stories run together pretty quickly. Half of these stories and references could be cut IMHO.
* If you have not yet bought a DSLR camera, this book will make you buy a Canon 5D Mark II (buy a III) If you already have a DSLR camera chances are you'll probably get annoyed with the constant, "I was amazed by..." and, "I couldn't believe..."

Recommended for:
Cinematographers that haven't had formal training and feel like they are in need of that extra push to get to that next level. Also beginners that have not yet purchased more than a single body and lens or two. This book has great recommendations.

By Kate Flores
The book was exactly how they described but unfortunately there was more to it. It was missing about a good sixty something pages but the pages weren't ripped out or anything, just missing. I don't blame them and really don't think they would have known unless they were looking up something within those pages. Once I contacted them again about it, they reimbursed me right away. If it wasn't for the missing chapters, I would give five stars.

Some people follow the rules. . .

A professor of forensic anthropology, James Donovan is the reasonable sibling among the passionate, impulsive Donovans. But there's nothing reasonable about his reaction to baker Gracie Roberts. She's all wild curls and mouth-watering curves, as deliciously tempting as the sugary treats she's famous for--and twice as irritating. But before long, James decides that getting a taste of her is one indulgence he can't pass up. . .

Some people play to win. . .

Independent, smart, and sexy, Gracie's year-long dry spell has her itching for a man. Responsible, health-obsessed James? Not in a million years! She needs a guy who knows how to let loose! But when James sets out to show her just how satisfying a disciplined man can be when pleasure is at stake, she learns just how sweet--and spicy--he really is.

Have James and Gracie found the recipe for love?

About the Author
Jennifer Dawson grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from DePaul University with a degree in psychology. She met her husband at the public library while they were studying. To this day she still maintains she was NOT checking him out. Now, over twenty years later, they're married and living in a suburb right outside of Chicago with two awesome kids and a crazy dog.

Despite going through a light FM, poem writing phase in high school, Jennifer never grew up wanting to be a writer (she had more practical aspirations of being an international super spy). Then one day, suffering from boredom and disgruntled with a book she'd been reading, she decided to put pen to paper. The rest, as they say, is history.

These days Jennifer can be found sitting behind her computer, writing her next novel, chasing after her kids, keeping an ever watchful eye on her ever growing to-do list, and NOT checking out her husband.

Sexy and Fun
By Adria Reyes
* A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review.

Forensic Anthropology professor James Donovan is the calm, reasonable sibling in the loud and passionate Donovan clan. His devotion to his health and fitness is well known among his inner circle but to baker Gracie Roberts it’s one trait in a list of things that annoy her about him. Unfortunately, with his sister married to her best friend, James and Gracie see each other a lot. And every time they do, they can’t help but argue like two five year olds who haven’t had their naps.

With a wedding coming up, James and Gracie decide to spend some time together to try and at least come to an understanding, instead, the clothes start flying off and to both their surprise, they seem to get a long quite well. But with their history and differences, neither thinks it can last forever.

James and Gracie were so much fun to watch that I breezed through The Name of the Game in a matter of hours. It was a verbal tennis match between these two for the first quarter of the book and while their friends and family might have found it exhausting, their constant bickering made me laugh. Where James was socially repressed, Gracie was outgoing. It was a great reversal in my opinion and gave a new perspective on the sexual tension between the two.

I don’t know if I would call The Name of the Game a small town romance since some of the characters live in Chicago and some live in the small town of Revival but they are an interesting bunch of characters whose lives are intertwined with each other in an interesting way. There’s Maddie Donovan, James’ sister who is married to Mitch Riley, Gracie’s best friend. Mitch’s sister Cecilia is engaged to Shane Donovan who is James’ oldest brother. Maddie’s best friend Penelope has a thing for the youngest Donovan brother, Evan. Revival’s sheriff, Charlie is friends with Gracie but used to date her as well and Gracie’s brother Sam? Well he owns Revival’s only bar and has yet to show interest in anyone. Got all that? It’s why James and Gracie just had to stop bickering, they were going to be seeing each other a lot!

James and Gracie’s relationship while smoking hot, also had a lot of development in it. They went from antagonizing strangers who didn’t understand each other, to lovers who didn’t know how to handle each other out of bed, to a couple who didn’t think they’d last. Their relationship was something I enjoyed. Every part of, the bickering, the confusion, the sexual tension, the longing, made for one really enjoyable ride. And when James finally loses his cool? So sexy, every single time. If you’ve got a “stern professor” fantasy, James certainly fulfills it! I’ll never dismiss another hero who is a professor again.

Really though, I had fun with this one. There was just enough snark, sex and good times to keep me up reading. Jennifer Dawson is a new to me author and I almost passed this book over but I’m glad I didn’t because The Name of the Game was such a good time that I had a hard time saying goodbye to it! The great news is that it’s not the last book in the series. There’s another brother and I’m hoping Gracie’s brother Sam and her ex-fling Charlie get a story of their own as well as Maddie’s other childhood friend Sophie.

Final Verdict: I can’t wait for the next book. It’s going to be an eternal test in patience…

Fun Romance
By Xkoqueen
The Name of the Game by Jennifer Dawon is an erotic romance. It is the third book in the Something New series. Each book in the series features one of the Donovan brothers, and each book can be read as a stand-alone novel.

Main characters Gracie Roberts and James Donovan couldn’t be more different, and their differences show in their constant bickering. Gracie is a blond bombshell who is a baker by trade. She runs her baking company out of her house in the small town of Revival, Illinois. Gracie acts fun and flirty to keep things light and maintain the wall she has built. James is the un-athletic runt of the Donovan litter. The 34 year old professor of forensic anthropology grew up feeling insecure about his weight, looks and lack of athletic ability. While he wasn’t a chick magnet in school, he has turned into a good looking geek who loves to run and avoids eating sugar like most people avoid eating rat poison. Most of the secondary characters are fairly well developed, however, Gracie’s brother, Sam, barely had a mention. Sam pops in and out of the story with little development and little to add to the story aside from being the explanation for why Grace didn’t attend culinary school.

James and Gracie are long time acquaintances who cannot be civil to one another for more than a nanosecond. Gracie knows James through his brothers and their girlfriends. Fortunately for all involved, James lives and teaches in Chicago while Gracie resides in a small town a couple hours away. Some of their friends see Gracie and James as “the Owl and the Pussycat” who, if left alone, would tear each other apart. A few of the friends suspect that the bickering is a front for their unstated attraction. When Gracie bakes for one of the friends’ engagement parties in Chicago, she becomes an instant hit with the influential guests. She is inundated with requests for special occasion cakes to be delivered to Chicago. With all the trips she starts to make to Chicago, you know she is going to run into James more often. Will Chicago’s next great fire be the result of their explosive arguing or their flaming hot desire?

I found the first few chapters of the book hard to get into due to the constant bickering. The bickering, and the reasons for it, was immature and something you might find in a young-adult novel. Those first few chapters set Gracie up to be rather unlikable and a bit of a caricature. She never won back my empathy. James, however, was a delightful character who is likable and believable. He has his issues, but he doesn’t blow them out proportion so that they define his life. I loved the scenes with James' friends, Annie and Jane, and with his nephew, Declan. The premise of and dialogue in those scenes was entertaining and funny. Overall, the intimate scenes were hot, but the addition of D/s behavior detracted from the story and didn’t work for me. Once the bickering stopped, the relationship tension and angst worked, and the ending was satisfying. A 3.5 star read for me due to the aforementioned plot point issues.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It’s a silly, irreverent story on the surface that still touches on very heavy topics
By Margaret Fisk
Originally posted on Tales to Tide You Over

There’s this saying about love being the other side of hate because both are strong, passionate emotions… That’s what this novel embodies with two people who think they dislike each other when really they’re hiding from their own feelings. James is less oblivious as he recognizes his physical attraction, but Gracie sees only the ways in which they’re different, and sees his choices as a condemnation of her.

You can understand the conflicts right off, and to all appearances, they are so opposite there should be no way James and Gracie attract. Yet, from the very start, they both share strong connections with friends and family who they want to make happy even if it means suffering the presence of the one person they each cannot stand.

That sense of connection in a larger family (whether blood or not) runs throughout the book and makes for a beautiful counterpoint to their early bickering. It also ties them in knots later as they worry at the consequences when their attraction becomes unavoidable despite its presumed temporary nature.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

A simple promise, extracted from each of them separately by those they love, dooms (and saves) James and Gracie. They’re asked if they can just be nice for a weekend. Trouble is, their battling is the only thing keeping them apart. No matter how much they believe they don’t suit, that they understand exactly the perfect person for the other—and they’re not it in any way, shape, or form—without the constant fighting, their passion has no other outlet.

You’d think this a sexual joyride, and it is both sensual and explicit at times as well as involving dominance games, but what captured my attention is the way the characters had to overcome their own insecurities to recognize just how perfect they are for each other.

James wasn’t always a sculpted Adonis while Gracie is far from the skinny, athletic type he seems to desire. But it’s more than their physical natures in play as Gracie made some sacrifices for her family and doesn’t seem able to move beyond those decisions when the need for them has passed. And James sees her behavior without understanding the roots so prejudges her as much as she has him. They both have to learn a lot about themselves before they can start to recognize how they are perfect for each other, which doesn’t mean they’re in any way perfect.

It’s a silly, irreverent story on the surface that still touches on very heavy topics about self-perception and how we’re quick to think our flaws the focus of how others perceive us. It’s a habit that doesn’t disappear after high school and can have serious effects on our life choices as is demonstrated here where James and Gracie almost deny their only chance at happiness first because they can’t see what makes them right for each other and then because they don’t believe it can last.

They are put in an impossible situation that is made more difficult by their poor choices, and yet, through crisis and conflict, they end up making it work and giving the reader an enjoyable tale with lingering questions to explore.

My only real quibble is his nickname for her, which seems out of place with the message of self-acceptance, but overall, it’s a strong, fun read with a real focus on community as well as the couple…and coupling of course.

P.S. I received this title from the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
