About the Author

James W. Osterburg was long involved in the investigation process, actively engaged in the functions of teaching, research, and public service. For 20 years, Osterburg served as a sworn member of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), where he assisted in the investigation of thousands of serious crimes. He testified in municipal, state, and federal courts on numerous occasions, and taught at the NYPD Police Academy. His academic affiliations include professorships at the University of Illinois at Chicago (Professor Emeritus); Indiana University; the University of California, Berkeley; the Baruch School of Public Administration at the City University of New York; and Sam Houston State University (as Beto Professor of Criminal Justice). A frequent participant in educational symposia, he discussed criminal investigation, criminalistics, fingerprint characteristics, and scientific evidence, and authored books on criminalistics and scientific investigation. His articles were published in a variety of scholarly journals, including the Journal of Criminal Law, Criminology, and Police Science; the Journal of the Forensic Sciences; the Journal of the American Statistical Association; and the Journal of Police Science and Administration. A Fellow and past president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, Osterburg served on the ad hoc committee appointed by the Academy president to review the homicide of Robert F. Kennedy and to help resolve the controversy that arose subsequent to the conviction of Sirhan B. Sirhan regarding some of the firearms evidence. Most recently, Osterburg was awarded the 2010 Paul L. Kirk Award, the highest award conferred by the Criminalistics Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), and was named a Distinguished Fellow Honoree at the 2012 AAFS conference.

Richard H. Ward is currently Associate Vice President for Research and Special Programs at the University of New Haven. He recently left the position of Dean of the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences there. A former New York City Detective, Dr. Ward is an internationally recognized expert on issues related to criminal investigation and global crime.

A Solid Text on Criminal Investigation

The text is divided into four sections with thirty chapters. New in this edition is a chapter on automobile theft. Earlier editions of the book were required reading for the International Association for Identification's crime scene certification course and I expect that will continue to be true with this edition.
The third edition continues to be bound in paperback which was one my main complaints from the second edition. The dimensions of the book of the been changed resulting in a rather more solid feel to this edition. I'd still prefer to see it in hard cover, however, I understand some of the cost factors involved, which lead to the use of a paper cover.
The third edition also includes a 228 page study guide. The instructors edition includes both an instructors guide, and a set of PowerPoint slides, although I didn't receive the slides with my review copy. Given the popularity of PowerPoint presentations I have to believe this is a valuable addition for those that are using the text in a college course.
Overall the book continues to be well written and illustrated with appropriate photographs or illustrations.
Section one is the Foundation and Principles of Criminal Investigation. Part A is the Sources and Uses of Information, which includes the History of Criminal Investigation, Uses of Physical Evidence, Using People as a Source of Information, and investigations involving records and files.
Section one Part B Seeking and Obtaining Information from People and Records, includes detailed information on Interviews, using Records and Files and Informants. Part C follow-up measures includes chapters on Surveillance, Eyewitness Identification (which includes sketches, composites and line-ups) and two chapters on Interrogation.
Section two: Applying the Principles to Criminal Investigation, includes a chapter on Reconstructing the Past, and chapters on specific crimes including Homicide, Robbery, Rape, Burglary and Arson.
Section three is specialized investigations and includes Terrorism, Computers, White-collar Crime and Crimes Involving Vehicles.
Section four is specialized topics and includes chapters on What is Crime? Managing Criminal Investigations, Controlling Investigations through Constitutional Law, Evidence and Effective Testimony. Chapters which review the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, and the Lindbergh kidnapping, a chapter on Satanism, Cults and Ritual Crime (which in my opinion is still a waste of paper) and a chapter on Raids.
The text also includes five appendices: FBI suggestions for Packaging Physical Evidence, Photographing a Crime Scene, the Vicap Crime Analysis Report, Missing Person Checklist and a Glossary.
Given the breadth of the material presented, the authors can't go into great detail about any particular subject, however, each of the chapters includes an extensive list of supplemental readings.
The third edition continues to be an excellent introductory text on criminal investigation and remains one of my top recommendations.

This was a very informative book written with a great deal of police insight. I liked the fact that it is new enough to have very recent events in it. Great examples. Only downfall I found was that there was a bit of repeating and jumping around from time to time, but not difficult to follow.

Great for intermediate digital manga artists

This book focuses on the steps taken to create a complete digital manga-style art piece. It isn't by any means a drawing guide for beginners. If you're currently into drawing manga art and coloring digitally, or you are curious of the process one goes through to create digital manga art, this book is fantastic. Each illustration is shown with conceptual sketches, line art as well as varying stages of the coloring process (blocking in solid colors, adding shading and highlights, etc.) Don't expect this book to teach you anatomy or in depth brush techniques. It's primarily a showcase of the art process done from start to finish. With a slightly more in depth explanation of how each work is done, I would have given this book 5 stars. It earns a solid 4. I will also note that a lot of anime drawing guidebooks in English actually feature comparatively poor art, but the artists in this book definitely have the talent to be producing quality manga in Japan.

Wonderful book, dont fall for the bad ratings you see here

Despite the low rating I saw on this book I then realized that only 2 people had bought it anyways, so I went ahead and got this book, along with the Shonen Manga Action Packed book.

Im gonna start off by saying these books are in no way made for beginner manga artists. They don't teach you the basics, like how to draw heads, eyes, hair, etc. The way the book starts off, its already implying you already know the basics and you have been drawing long enough to know how to sketch and create characters.

Each drawing featured shows briefly how the sketch was done, before adding hair, clothes, background, inking, etc. Then it shows the coloring process, then the finished product. This process is shown for every single drawing or painting in the book. Each artist has their own style of drawing and coloring too, so it's a mix of traditional and digital artwork.

The book is really heavy too, which is good in my personal opinion, it means there's a lot of content contained in there. Meaning more to learn, more pictures to look at.. Im a very happy customer :D
So, since its heavy its also a really thick book too, but the cover is glossy and not hard at all. So it might kind of hover over pages when you close the book, (like it wont close all the way) after heavy use.. like holding the book open for a long time while youre reading the steps and looking at artwork. Which is what I expect, since I like to take in all the details, heh.. Theres also a lot of different poses, themes, character designs and different styles of coloring and drawing, so theres alot to take in here. Theres at least 350 pages in this book. Im not exaggerating.

Overall Im very pleased. When the package came in, the book was wrapped tightly in plastic covering, which was also wrapped in loose plastic covering. There was no damage done to the book at all.

It is certainly not a coffee table book, as I read in the other review. If you actually read the steps and understand how the process is done, you can learn from it and probably adopt some ideas for yourself from this book.

Evelio Martínez Martínez Es egresado de la tercera generación (1987-1991) de Licenciados en Ciencias Computacionales (LCC) de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC). En 2001 realizó estudios de maestría en Telecomunicaciones y Redes de Información en la Fundación Teleddes, A.C. Desde 1992 se desempeña como docente en la Facultad de Ciencias en la carrera de LCC. También ha participado como consultor de empresas de la iniciativa privada donde colaboró en diversos proyectos. Como académico ha participado en diversos congresos, simposiums y foros internacionales como ponente y proyectos de investigación. Ha escrito más de 70 artículos de divulgación para diversas revistas nacionales e internacionales, tanto impresas como electrónicas. Es coautor de 3 libros: La brecha digital: mitos y realidades publicado por la Editorial UABC en diciembre de 2003 y en 2008, la segunda edición y el libro Digitalización y convergencia global publicado en 2010. Arturo Serrano Santoyo Nació en la Ciudad de México en 1951. Obtuvo el grado de Doctor en Ciencias en Ingeniería Eléctrica en 1980 en el Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados (CINVESTAV). En 1981 recibió el Premio Nacional de Electrónica y Telecomunicaciones de la empresa ALCATEL y en 1985 el Premio de Telecomunicaciones de ERICSON, ambos por sus contribuciones al desarrollo de las telecomunicaciones en México y Latinoamérica. El Dr. Serrano es autor del libro Las telecomunicaciones en latinoamérica: retos y perspectivas publicado por Prentice-Hall y coautor de La brecha digital: mitos y realidades. También es coautor del libro Digitalización y convergencia global publicado en 2010. Actualmente es investigador en el Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada, Baja California (CICESE) y catedrático en la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC).

Based on courses for students of science, engineering, and systems science at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences at Winterthur, this text approaches the fundamentals of thermodynamics from the point of view of continuum physics. By describing physical processes in terms of the flow and balance of physical quantities, the author achieves a unified approach to hydraulics, electricity, mechanics and thermodynamics. In this way, it becomes clear that entropy is the fundamental property that is transported in thermal processes (i.e., heat), and that temperature is the corresponding potential. The resulting theory of the creation, flow, and balance of entropy provides the foundation of a dynamical theory of heat.

This extensively revised and updated second edition includes new material on dynamical chemical processes, thermoelectricity, and explicit dynamical modeling of thermal and chemical processes. To make the book more useful for courses on thermodynamics and physical chemistry at different levels, coverage of topics is divided into introductory and more advanced and formal treatments. As someone who has taken several courses in thermodynamics, thermostatistics, and kinetics, prior to completing a doctorate, I look back on my first dedicated thermodynamics course as a physics undergraduate, taught with Herbert Callen’s classic textbook (and thus utilizing an approach regarded as inferior in the Fuchs text), as a course that was, simultaneously, intuitive, intellectually invigorating, and quite refreshing, in its ability to provide a new and fundamentally important set of insights into our available means of observing and interpreting the world.

If I had taken that first course with this Fuchs textbook, instead, (and the present book is introductory material, not graduate level) I am reasonably sure that I would have been psychologically handicapped with regards to this subject matter for quite some time thereafter, if not permanently. If my son were taking a thermodynamics course that relied on this textbook, I would strongly advise him to drop it and stay away from that instructor as a reliable educational resource.

The author of this book is essentially standing on the traditional shoulders of giants, while ignoring their nomenclature and the vast body of rigorous exploration that it provides, and instead contriving a poorly underwritten set of new jargon that is vaguely introduced and remains not rigorously defined. The text-based explanations are rambling, as well as inconceivably sloppy and inconsistent in the of use of pregnant terms such as "thermal," "mechanical," and "electronic" (e.g., processes inscrutably qualified as "purely thermal" and in others processes are distinguished by "pure heating"). The problems addressed in examples are necessarily rudimentary applications problems, because the assumed approach of redefining (a non-probabalistic) entropy by virtue of a trivial algebraic swapping of variables (and thus inventing a nonphysical, non-conserved, generic "substance") would inevitably run up against a brick wall, if more advanced problems were addressed.

Grouping (and conflating) the utilization of equations of state, in thermodynamics, under the same moniker of “statics” (p. vii, Preface, etc.) in mechanics, (and thereby regarding them as somehow equivalent approaches, or of vaguely similar utility) is as lazy and non-illuminating as the subsequent grouping of entropy under the same class of “substance” that also includes mass and heat (throughout the book). Simply because it works, in a limited manner, under a one-size-fits-all approach of fluid analysis, does not mean that it is a sound heuristic basis for teaching basic thermodynamics, nor that it warrants a full course textbook.

A facinating view of entropy

This thermodynamics textbook is different from the typical treatment. Instead of developing entropy as an abstract mathematical concept loosely connected with "disorder", Fuchs views entropy as a fluid, much like we view charge or momentum as a fluid. It is an odd fluid to be sure, since it is not conserved and is created in dissipative processes. Nevertheless, this approach allows us to bring much of our intuition of fluids to bear on thermo problems. As a result, we can know entropy in both a mathematical sense and an intuitive sense, and thus be more comfortable with the concept. The analogy to a fluid turns out to be a pretty good one. For instance, consider the comparison to electric charge. Currents of charge are driven by gradients of a potential. Currents of entropy are driven by gradients in temperature. Currents of energy are carried along with currents of charge. Likewise, currents of energy are carried with currents of entropy. Once you start thinking in these terms, problems that seemed very complex are suddenly straightforward.
The book covers a wide range of topics in thermodynamics, plus there are chapters on related topics. There are many detailed example problems throughout the text, which help drive home the concepts, and there are many problems at the end of each chapter (without solutions). It looks like the book is designed primarily to be a textbook for undergraduate thermodynamics classes, but I bought it for self study and found it very readable and enjoyable.

The power of an image is immense and Dr Elmore has creative a very practical resource that will stick in my mind each time I communicate. The 'Windows & Mirrors' image is especially powerful as a youth worker, as I want to help young people reflect on who they are as individuals and what they desire from and in life.
