Why do modern cities, suburbs, and industrial and farming landscapes all tend to look alike despite their regional settings? In this generously illustrated and provocative book, a landscape architect argues that the monotony of the modern landscape is a reflection of indifference on the part of society to the diversity inherent in ecological systems and in human communities. In case studies drawn from all parts of the world-Turkey and Hong Kong to northern England and Edinburgh, to Kentucky and Oregon, to Ontario and Manitoba-Michael Hough shows how build environments work and what designers can do to maintain the clearly identifiable differences between one place and another.

The Day Parliament Burned Down, by Caroline Shenton

In the early evening of 16 October 1834, to the horror of bystanders, a huge ball of fire exploded through the roof of the Houses of Parliament, creating a blaze so enormous that it could be seen by the King and Queen at Windsor, and from stagecoaches on top of the South Downs. In front of hundreds of thousands of witnesses the great conflagration destroyed Parliament's glorious old buildings and their contents. No one who witnessed the disaster would ever forget it.

The events of that October day in 1834 were as shocking and significant to contemporaries as the death of Princess Diana was to us at the end of the 20th century - yet today this national catastrophe is a forgotten disaster, not least because Barry and Pugin's monumental new Palace of Westminster has obliterated all memory of its 800 year-old predecessor. Rumours as to the fire's cause were rife. Was it arson, terrorism, the work of foreign operatives, a kitchen accident, careless builders, or
even divine judgement on politicians?

In this, the first full-length book on the subject, head Parliamentary Archivist Caroline Shenton unfolds the gripping story of the fire over the course of that fateful day and night. In the process, she paints a skilful portrait of the political and social context of the time, including details of the slums of Westminster and the frenzied expansion of the West End; the plight of the London Irish; child labour, sinecures and corruption in high places; fire-fighting techniques and floating
engines; the Great Reform Act and the new Poor Law; Captain Swing and arson at York Minster; the parlous state of public buildings and records in the Georgian period; and above all the symbolism which many contemporaries saw in the spectacular fall of a national icon.

A forgotten National disaster.
By J. Mcdonald
Prior to reading this, my knowledge of the great fire that destroyed the Palace of Westminster was limited to its date and the depiction of the event through Turner's magnificent paintings, so this was an interesting exploration of a largely forgotten event in history.

Shenton does an admirable job of reconstructing the anatomy of the disaster with an almost forensic attention to detail; along the way she makes temporary departures from her narrative in order to provide historical background and contextual information furnishing the reader with a greater understanding of both the iconic status the buildings held for the country and the great social and political developments of the time. The resulting miscellany of architectural history, the people and business of the parliament of the day, the greater social background against which the event was set, together with fascinating details concerning such things as the organisation and practice of contemporary fire-fighting, all make this a veritable treasure trove of information on the conflagration and its significance.
My one criticism of the book is of the illustrations; as another reviewer remarked, the maps and floor plans are rather small-scale, making them difficult to reference and to read; also the decision to print all of the plates in black and white was a missed opportunity - in an age when photography was unavailable the event was largely documented by artists, something Shenton gives much attention to in her text. Not to reproduce the Turner paintings - which capture the fearsome beauty and drama of the scene so eloquently - in colour, has deprived readers of a description more vivid than any words could convey; as it is, that drama is lost in a miasma of grey. The book-jacket illustration - by a lesser artist - has to serve this purpose alone.

That gripe aside, this is an impressive first book by this author, a well-paced, informative read and an easily recommendable volume.

The Day Parliament Burned Down
By Damaskcat
This is a fascinating and fantastically detailed hour by hour and minute by minute account of when the Houses of Parliament burned down on the night of October 16/17 1834. It is an almost forgotten event now partly because of the glorious building designed by Pugin which replaced it. If anything the book is almost too detailed and I found myself quite bogged down in it at times. The book is well written and meticulously researched.

The author involves the reader in the lives of the ordinary people employed to keep the Palace of Westminster running and shows how a chain of small events led to the bigger one of the historic conflagration.

There is a useful list of Dramatis Personae at the end of the book together with copious notes on the text and an index. The book is illustrated with black and white photographs and maps. The hardback edition of the book is well produced by Oxford University Press.

An American who enjoys England
By hudunit333
A very enjoyable read. Until I stumbled upon the book, I as an American, had no knowledge about this event in British history. I have had the pleasure of travelling to England 5-6 times over the past 30 yrs. and visited Westminster Abby twice. It is absolutely mind-boggling to me the history, tradition and culture contained within it's walls. Even though I am an American with absolutely no English ancestry, I can't help feeling that the roots of all my cultural and legal beliefs are archived within those walls.

The author manages to tell this tale, give insight into English character, a bit of history into firefighting equipment, the politics of the time and ancient accounting practices and tell it with a bit of humor. Glad I read it. Now I'm disappointed I didn't know about or visit Westminster Hall. I'll have to get back and enjoy a few pints in the bargain!

Machine Learning: A Probabilistic Perspective (Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning series), by Kevin P. Murphy

Today's Web-enabled deluge of electronic data calls for automated methods of data analysis. Machine learning provides these, developing methods that can automatically detect patterns in data and then use the uncovered patterns to predict future data. This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach. The coverage combines breadth and depth, offering necessary background material on such topics as probability, optimization, and linear algebra as well as discussion of recent developments in the field, including conditional random fields, L1 regularization, and deep learning. The book is written in an informal, accessible style, complete with pseudo-code for the most important algorithms. All topics are copiously illustrated with color images and worked examples drawn from such application domains as biology, text processing, computer vision, and robotics. Rather than providing a cookbook of different heuristic methods, the book stresses a principled model-based approach, often using the language of graphical models to specify models in a concise and intuitive way. Almost all the models described have been implemented in a MATLAB software package -- PMTK (probabilistic modeling toolkit) -- that is freely available online. The book is suitable for upper-level undergraduates with an introductory-level college math background and beginning graduate students.

Review

An astonishing machine learning book: intuitive, full of examples, fun to read but still comprehensive, strong and deep! A great starting point for any university student -- and a must have for anybody in the field.

(Jan Peters, Darmstadt University of Technology; Max-Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems)

Kevin Murphy excels at unraveling the complexities of machine learning methods while motivating the reader with a stream of illustrated examples and real world case studies. The accompanying software package includes source code for many of the figures, making it both easy and very tempting to dive in and explore these methods for yourself. A must-buy for anyone interested in machine learning or curious about how to extract useful knowledge from big data.

(John Winn, Microsoft Research, Cambridge)

This is a wonderful book that starts with basic topics in statistical modeling, culminating in the most advanced topics. It provides both the theoretical foundations of probabilistic machine learning as well as practical tools, in the form of Matlab code. The book should be on the shelf of any student interested in the topic, and any practitioner working in the field.

(Yoram Singer, Google Inc.)

This book will be an essential reference for practitioners of modern machine learning. It covers the basic concepts needed to understand the field as whole, and the powerful modern methods that build on those concepts. In Machine Learning, the language of probability and statistics reveals important connections between seemingly disparate algorithms and strategies. Thus, its readers will become articulate in a holistic view of the state-of-the-art and poised to build the next generation of machine learning algorithms.

(David Blei, Princeton University)

This comprehensive book should be of great interest to learners and practitioners in the field of machine learning.

MLAPP and other machine learning textbooks
By Sebastien Bratieres
(Disclaimer: I have worked with a draft of the book and been allowed to use the instructor's review copy for this review. I have bought the book from Amazon.co.uk, but apparently this Amazon.com review can't be tagged "verified purchase". I don't receive any compensation whatsoever for writing this review. I hope it will help you chose a machine learning textbook.)

Similar textbooks on statistical/probabilistic machine learning (links to book websites, not Amazon pages):
- Barber's Bayesian Reasoning and Machine Learning ("BRML", Cambridge University Press 2012)
- Koller and Friedman's Probabilistic Graphical Models ("PGM", MIT Press 2009)
- Bishop's Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning ("PRML", Springer 2006)
- MacKay's Information Theory, Inference and Learning Algorithms ("ITILA", CUP 2003)
- Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman's Elements of Statistical Learning ("ESL", Springer 2009)

* Perspective: My perspective is that of a machine learning researcher and student, who has used these books for reference and study, but not as classroom textbooks.

* Audience/prerequisites: they are comparable among all the textbooks mentioned. BRML has lower expected commitment and specialization, PGM requires more scrupulous reading. The books differ in their topics and disciplinary approach, some more statistical (ESL), some more Bayesian (PRML, ITILA), some focused on graphical models (PGM, BRML). K Murphy compares MLAPP to others here. For detailed coverage comparison, read the table of contents on the book websites.

* Main strength: MLAPP stands out for covering more advanced and current research topics: there is a full chapter on Latent Dirichlet Allocation, learning to rank, L1 regularization, deep networks; in the basics, the decision theory part is quite thorough (e.g. will mention Jeffrey's/uninformative priors). The book is "open" and vivid, doesn't shy away from current research and advanced concepts. This seems to be purposeful, as it shows in many aspects:

- quotes liberally from web sources, something usually not done in academic publications

- borrows "the best" from other authors (always with permission and acknowledgment, of course): most importantly the best pictures and diagrams, but also tables, recaps, insightful diagrams. Whereas other books will produce their own pictures and diagrams themselves (eg, PRML has a distinctive clarity and style in its illustrations), MLAPP takes many of its colour illustrations from other people's publications; therefore it can select the most pithy and relevant pictures to make a point. You could think that reproductions may be illegible and require extra effort to interpret because they come from a variety of sources; I have found that the bonus coming from having precisely the right image prevails.

- frequent references to the literature, mentions of extensions and open questions, as well as computational complexity considerations: for instance, the section on HMMs will mention duration modeling and variable-duration Markov models, and a comparison of the expressive power of hierarchical HMMs versus stochastic context-free grammars, complete with relevant citations, and a brief mention of the computational complexity results from the publications. All this connects the material with research and new ideas in a fine way -- which other textbooks don't achieve, I find. For instance, PGM defers references to a literature section at the end of each chapter, resulting in a more self-contained, but more poorly "linked" text.

* Didactic aids: Another distinctive feature is that the author clearly has tried to include didactic aids gathered over the years, such as recaps, comparative tables, diagrams, much in the spirit of the "generative model of generative models" (Roweis and Ghahramani): e.g. table comparing all models discussed, pros and cons of generative vs. discriminative models, recap of operations on HMMs (smoothing, filtering etc), list of parameter estimation methods for CRFs.

* Editorial features: Other editorial features worth mentioning are

- compared to others, helpful mentions of terminology, e.g. jargon, nomenclature, concept names, in bold throughout the text ("you could also devise a variant thus; this is called so-and-so")

- mathematical notation relatively clear and consistent, occasional obscurities. PGM stands out as excruciatingly precise on this aspect.

- boxes/layout: no "skill boxes" or "case study boxes" (PGM), not many roadmap/difficulty indications like ITILA or PGM, examples are present but woven into the text (not separated like PGM or BRML). Layout rather plain and homogeneous, much like PRML.

- sadly lacks list of figures and tables, but has index of code

* Complete accompanying material:

- interesting exercises (yet fewer than PRML, BRML, PGM); solutions, however, are only accessible to instructors (same with BRML, PGM), which in my experience makes them only half as useful for the self-learner. PRML and ITILA have some solutions online resp. in the book.

- accompanying Matlab/Octave source code, which I found more readily usable than BRML's. PGM and PRML have no accompanying source code, even though the toolkit distributed with Koller's online PGM class might qualify as one. I find accompanying code a truly useful tool for learning; there's nothing like trying to implement an algorithm, checking your implementation against a reference, having boilerplate/utility code for the parts of the algorithm you're not interested in re-implementing. Also, code may clarify an algorithm, even when presented in pseudo-code. By the way, MLAPP has rather few pseudo-code boxes (like BRML or PRML, while PGM is very good here).

- MLAPP is not freely available as a PDF (unlike BRML, closest topic-wise, ESL, or ITILA). This will no doubt reduce its diffusion. My own take on the underlying controversy is in favor of distributing the PDF: makes successful books widely popular and cited (think ITILA or Rasmussen and Williams' Gaussian Processes), increases the book's overall value, equips readers with a weightless copy to annotate with e-ink, or consult on the go. I believe PDF versions positively impact sales, too: impact neutral-to-positive to course textbook/university library sales, indifferent to sales in countries with widely different purchase power, positive to all other segments due to enormous diffusion/popularity.

* Conclusion:
The closest contender to this book I believe is BRML. Both are excellent textbooks and have accompanying source code.

BRML is more accessible, has a free PDF version, and a stronger focus on graphical models.
MLAPP has all the qualities of an excellent graduate textbook (unified presentation, valuable learning aids), and yet is unafraid of discussing detail points (e.g. omnipresent results on complexity), as well as advanced and research topics (LDA, L1 regularization).

Consider Other Options Before Purchasing.
By Johnyo
I'm sure if you are a Google Research Scientist and are not learning the material for the first time, this book is amazing. For everyone else, I would not recommend it. I bought this book for my Fall 2013 COMPSCI 571 class, and I regret it. Before buying this book, consider the following:

1. Take a look at the online Errata. This book is already in it's 3rd printing and it just came out. The list of corrections for this (the 3rd edition) is already mind-numbingly long. The 4th printing coming out this month will surely fix some errors, but there are just too many.
2. Our class has an online forum (for a 100 person class) where we discuss topics, and most questions are either (a) basic topics from the book that no one understood or (b) talking about how one figure in the book has multiple errors associated with it. At first I was really excited to find mistakes and submit them to the Errata - it was like I was part of the book! Now I just get frustrated and have already given up on submitting corrections.
3. Our instructor regrets using this book and modifies the examples before giving them to us in class. Our out of class readings now consist mostly of MetaAcademy.com.
4. There are hardly any worked-through examples, and many of those that are worked through have errors.
5. Many important concepts are skimmed over way too quickly. For example, there is a whole chapter on Logistic regression. However, Logistic regression is covered for exactly 2 pages. Then a weird 3D graph is presented but not explained (a common theme throughout the book is graphs that look absolutely amazing, but which convey little information as to exactly what's going on to a lay-person like me), then the rest of the chapter presents methods for doing the math, which I'm sure are useful in some sense, but I'm still thinking: "why is this MLE not in closed form, what is a Hessian doing here... and wtf is going on?!"

Most students just got the PDF for free online, and I would highly suggest doing something other than paying $55 for this book.

Expensive but good reference book
By Niketan Pansare
For beginners:
A. For somewhat theoretical approach to machine learning
1. If you have less than a month to study it: Read Learning From Data (~$30).
2. If you have a semester: Read Learning From Data along with lecture series by Yaser's on youtube.

B. For more applied approach to machine learning
1. If you have semester: Go through Andrew Ng's lecture series

For intermediate to advanced:
1. If you have a semester: Read this book.

Other classic machine learning textbooks, if you have more time:
1. Pattern Recognition And Machine Learning (The first book I read on Machine Learning. Very accessible. More detailed than Yasir's book, but less than Kevin's book)
2. The Nature of Statistical Learning Theory (Information Science and Statistics) by Vapnik (One of the pioneer in this field. Extremely theoretical approach)
3. Elements of Statistical Learning - Hastie et al (free pdf copy available)

Did you hear what happened to Lady Irene? Yes, Lord Fortson's wife. She went to a slave auction with him. That's right, she watched him buy a new slave. Beautiful creature, I heard. Everyone's saying that he paid an outrageous price for it. But a titled lady going to a slave auction was only the beginning of the scandal. When she saw her husband buy that gorgeous slave, Lady Irene went right around the bend. Completely stark, raving mad. And you know what she did? Scandalous! No one ever heard of such a thing. I knew her, you know, and I can't believe she'd do something like that. But everyone says she really did it. And now, I heard that someone wrote a book about it. It's tells all the filthy details for anyone to read. Lady Annabelle told me that it's downright pornographic. I've just got to get a hold of a copy and hear the whole story.

Great plot with still all the hardcore
By Koala Bear
I've been an Ashley Zacharias fan for years, and this did not disappoint. She's constructed an interesting parallel universe with a world that seems vaguely Victorian in terms of the social constraints and class structure, but with close to modern technology. Plus the one little detail that slavery is common, and that female slaves are used as sex toys for men who all seem to enjoy a bit of sexual sadism. Which means the poor protagonist is subjected to numerous humiliations, floggings, penetrations, and other tortures. All described in the loving detail that makes an Ashley Zacharias story such a treat.

very well written BDSM erotica
By Andrew J. Heller
On The Auction Block is the first in a series of BDSM 5 novels. The setting is a world with modern technology, but a medieval society. There are automobiles and electricity, alongside a land-owning aristocracy and slavery. One may be enslaved for debt or as a criminal sentence, after which they are sold at public auctions. No explanation is given, but since the premise is clearly borrowed from Commander James Bondage's By Judicial Decree and its sequels as in those books we are doubtless in an alternate world. If the author's basic premise is not, perhaps, wholly original, she makes it her own, creating a very detailed and believable world for her characters. (for a comparison see By Judicial Decree
As in the Commander Bondage novel, On the Auction Block starts with the newly enslaved protagonist, the aristocrat Lady Irene, being sold on the block (hence the title). However, her enslavement is voluntary. Irene, it develops, is too hot-blooded to remain the wife of a Lord in a sexless marriage (except for very occasional intercourse for procreation only), as is the custom. The men satisfy their sexual needs with beautiful young pleasure slaves, leaving nothing for their wives. Irene while attending an slave auction with her husband, suddenly decides to sell herself. Her motive seems to be sexual frustration mixed with jealousy (her husband has bought a slave girl who is younger and more beautiful than Irene). As a slave, her name now Flame, she learns the arts of sex and enjoys rough intercourse and numerous orgasms with her new owner, but is never happy for long . She constantly wavers from regret, to contentment, to regret again. This gets old very quickly, and if it continues through the entire 5 books, might well become unendurable.
Overall, the writing is very good, of much higher quality than is usual for this type of literature, and I can recommend it for this reason. But the real test for an erotic novel is whether it is arousing. Does it stir the reader's juices? This is not an easy question to answer. Erotic fantasies are a little like eggs: everybody likes their a slightly different way. With this caveat in mind, I will say that I for one, did not find it especially arousing. The author did not seem very interested in the sex scenes. She gives them comparatively short shrift, preferring to provide copious details of everything from menus to the habits and manners of the aristocracy in her invented world instead. Certainly, there is a lot of intercourse, but the protagonist does not seem to enjoy it all that much, which tends to undermine her supposed motivation, that she is, quite literally, a slave of love.
Do not let the preceding paragraph stop you from reading On the Auction Block. It is an entertaining read, and as I have said, any judgement as to its sexiness is mostly subjective. You may well want to rush off to a private place for a few minutes soon after you begin after reading.

Zecharias has created an alternate world of sexual slavery
By David Read
Very interesting work of BDSM erotica. In this five-part series, Ashley Zacharias has created a world with 1950s technology, but with an early Victorian-Era class system that has knights, lords, earls, barons, etc., but in which the upper echelons practice sexual slavery. Wealthy men keep "kennels" of female sex slaves. Lady Irene Fortson, our protagonist, is sick of her husband's neglect; except for rare occasions, he denies her marital consortium, satisfying himself with the beautiful slaves in his "kennel." One day, Lady Irene accompanies him to a slave auction and, in a fit of madness, jumps up on the auction block to sell herself into slavery. She hopes her husband will buy her, but, disgusted at her embarrassing breach of social protocol, Lord Fortson leaves her to her chosen fate. In the five novels she's owned by a wealthy commoner looking to learn manners and buy a knighthood, a friend of her husband, a college professor who is a real sadist, a group of 12 commoners who go in together to purchase her as a sort of time-share, and I won't spoil the last ownership scenario, but you'll see it coming a mile away. Each ownership scenario comes with its own issues and challenges, and its own masochistic rewards for Irene.

Zacharias writes like a man, with a very simple, straightforward style. This is not a romance novel, or even an "erotic romance" novel, there's nothing flowery, emotional, or romantic going on here. It is sui generis, its own genre. Zacharias seems to be a hardcore masochist, but writes for herself and other like-minded women, and doesn't seem too interested in exploring the psychology of male sadists.

If you like the first novel, which is free, you'll also like the last four, which are $3.99 each, so you might as well plan on shelling out $16.00 plus tax for the whole series. I had to stop myself from binge-reading them, spreading them out over time.
