Handiest textbook ever!

I bought this book shortly before I graduated from PT school and now two years out I find myself still referring to it. It has great guidelines since a lot of physicians do not include protocols when they refer their patients to our office. I found it very in depth but I like the summary charts which are very easy to follow. I also found it very comprehensive and have yet to come across a surgical procedure that is not covered in this text. It is definitely a great investment and many other therapists also frequently borrow it from me.

Great book for the price...even if priced higher. I've seen the hardcover version and a later edition and I'm totally loving this abridged view of his flowers.

Not quite the best available

While the photos are stunning, the presentation is a little rough. While most photos are presented with a blank page opposite there are a few photos that face other photos. This is a little jarring but worse is the two photos that are printed across the facing page. The spine break really detracts from a pair of beautiful photos.
Mapplethorpe was a genius with a camera and this book gives us many reminders of his skill. The publisher, however, lacks the artistic eye that would have prevented the distractions of a few photos that are damaged or badly placed by the layout. Minus a star because it could have been layed out better

Perpetual Spring Provides Creative Inspiration!

This book deserves more than five stars. It is the finest set of flower photography that I have seen before, and presents more dimensions of what a flower can mean that I would have thought possible.
I took a course of creativity from author Dan Wakefield a number of years ago. One of the many excellent exercises we did was to take a flower and write as much as we could about what we observed during an hour. At the end of the time, I was bursting with new ideas for all kinds of things. Try it sometime!
Seeing this marvelous book by Robert Mapplethorpe (that would earn a G rating if it were a motion picture) reminded me of that exercise. I had the same feeling as I examined each image, and had a great desire to start taking notes.
The essay, A Final Flower, by Patti Smith helps put these great works in perspective. Mr. Mapplethorpe found it "as easy to hurl beauty as anything else." "He came, in time, to embrace the flower as the embodiment of all the contradictions reveling within [him]." He was inspired by "their sleekness, their fullness, Humble narcissus, Passionate zen." As such, he found flowers to be "worthy conspirators in the courting and development of conflicting emotions."
The images themselves evoke more complicated views than any others of flowers that I have seen. The closest to his style is that which Georgia O'Keeffe used in her painings. But there are more dimensions to these photographs.
For example, a single flower may evoke a part of a human body, but it will also stimulate an impression of a human emotion contained in the flower image separate from the body part. Further, the shadowed background behind the flower will add movement and context that greatly expand the meaning of the overall image. Mr. Mapplethorpe also displays a genius for using varieties of color together to express complicated rhythms that make looking at the images a lot like listening to a drum beating a distinctive tattoo. He also employs juxtaposition (to make one thing appear to be part of something else), allusions to emerging and receding, and contrasts to great effect.
The technical quality of the images is superb. The lighting, detail, and composition of each image are precisely as must have been intended. Each image is an exquisite gem. Although I liked all of the images, some appealed to me more than others. Here are my favorites:
Irises, 1988; Rose, 1989; Orchid, 1977; White Longstem Flower, 1982; Orchids, 1982; Orchid, 1986; Flowers in a Vase, 1985; Orchids, 1987; and Poppy, 1988 (second one). I would like to specially praise the astonishing Calla Lilies (1985-1988) for their amazing beauty and inspiring qualities.
Where else can something simple display so much important meaning and complexity about nature and the viewer? I suggest that you consider looking at leaves, rocks, and feathers as possible additional sources of inspiration. Try your hand at arranging tableaux that use the vocabulary of Mr. Mapplethorpe's work here.
May your heart and mind be suffused with the wonders around you . . . creating a meditation inspired by nature!

Eclectic, unconventional, and ingenious

Before reviewing the book I will say a few things about how it came about. This is *not* a book written by Weber himself -- instead it is reproduced from lecture notes in an economic history course that he gave. It does not detract from the genius of the book, but it does mean that the material occasionally feels a bit disorganized.

Now to the good parts.

Weber accounts world economic history up to modern capitalism from his particular vantage point. He starts with the agricultural village, goes to pre-capitalistic industry and mining, the commercial system before capitalism, as well as outlining the institutional and ideological foundations for modern capitalism.

The book is driven by his key theoretical concerns: the importance of political institutions; rationalization in world history; the evolutionary nature of social institutions; the role of religion and magic in social life. Despite the attention paid to sociological factors, the analysis is done without ever losing sight of the classic economic concerns: market pricing, investments being made in response to returns, money being a facilitator of exchange, the importance of incentives in the construction of financial contracts, etc. As an economic PhD student I feel myself at home.

In that sense it is the most comprehensive economic history I've read. Other histories often want to push their particular hypothesis, and their choice of material reflects this aim. Now Weber also has an hypothesis, but he also believes that every theory is partial, and shows this incompleteness by describing strange things off the beaten theoretical track. One of my personal favorites is that using the Arabic numeral system in accounting was seen as "unfair competition", which delayed its adoption.

This can be seen as eclectic, but is understandable once we realize that Weber wants to show his students that history is not a linear progression in perfect concord with his theory. It also allows us to get a glimpse of what he considered to be of secondary importance, and allows us to judge his theory.

Now some warning. The book is very dense and a bit unconventional in style. When we discussed it in our economic reading group, it could take half an hour to summarize 12 pages. Also, there are confusing side-tracks running into pages about the details of different monetary regimes, the structure of Germanic peasant villages, and financial contracts in Babylonia. In one sense, you are overwhelmed by Weber's vast erudition; in another sense, you think "get to the point".

But it is still an extremely useful book to read. Firstly, because you realize that there isn't "the point" with economic history, but a collection of facts which we have a partial theoretical understanding of, and that all our explanations have exceptions. Secondly, because he gives an excellent outline of the different concerns we need to bring to an analysis of history: technical, instiutional, ideological, religious.

In the end, you won't know everything about economic history, but you will have a much better sense of what there is to know.

Best single book to read about Max Weber

This book was assembled from student notes, but it contains the maturest condensation of Weber's world historical vision. Everything else has methodological strictures, but this compilation really provides his fullest thought. For example, Weber did not think that Protestantism caused capitalism, but one might suppose he did who read only his Protestant Ethic. That monographic effort was a deliberate attempt to examine the supply side, ignoring the rest, in order to make the point, then very novel, that economic activity is deeply cultural. The General Economic History also introduces middleman minorities, a topic that went on to become cultural and social capital a century later.

I may have laughed through this book in 10 minutes but it was a wonderful 10 minutes. This book is at times sweet, sarcastic, and utterly ridiculous. I'm sure I will be referring back to it on rainy days. Very cute overall.

A "Super Cute Flippity Flappity Rampage" of funny

I received an advanced copy of this book, which is why I have a few months on the rest of you with a new favorite party trick: hand the book to a guest and have them try to pick their favorite. First of all, it's impossible, because every one of Mary Laura Philpott's irreverent Penguins with People Problems is funny. But seeing what people gravitate to is like a Rorschach test. My 80-something mom was a fan of the "bit of a work-friend whore" bit, while my dad liked Marsha and her four maragaritas writing her memoir. Mine? Milo and his secret obsession with owning a dance floor a la Billie Jean.

The point is, there's no point to this book, besides making you laugh, reread, laugh, reread. I'm stocking up to give anyone I know who needs cheering up.

About the Author

Robert Schwarz, Psy.D., DCEP, is a licensed psychologist and marriage and family therapist. He has been in private practice for more than 25 years and is the Executive Director of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology.

Elaine Braff, M.P.S., A.T.R., is an expressive arts therapist, couples coach, marriage educator, and Master Leader of the nationally acclaimed PAIRS marriage education course. She’s been in private practice for 31 years in South Orange, New Jersey.

Practical and inspiring

As an editor on a psychology magazine, I see a lot of books about how to improve your couple relationship. When this one crossed my desk, I took notice. Starting from a simple premise - that couples have a lot of fun when they first get together, but that fun increasingly takes a back seat over the years - Schwarz and Braff argue that many relationship problems can be solved by upping your fun quotient within your couple. They then offer real world advice on how to start having fun together again, even when your family and work life are demanding and time consuming. The book is definitely accessible for couples as well as practitioners, and I highly recommend it to both - it's an inspiring, enjoyable and smart read.

Great Advice for Couples

Even if you think your relationship is OK, this book provides some great insights on improving it even more. If your relationship is less than great, this book is a must. My advice is to skip the first chapter as it is very technical and somewhat less than exciting. The remainder of the book is fantastic, we'll written, very fascinating thought about why things in relationships go south and some great points on making things better. Highly recommended and enlightening.

It can be fun after all!

Joyous,encouraging,positive,and thought provoking approach to couples therapy.
Although I have not completed this book yet,it really rang true with my personal experiences with relationships.
When I take a play history from my patients, it has usually been quite revealing and helpful.
I am very grateful to the authors for their refreshing approach to a very difficult problem.
