About the Author
Patrick J. Ryan, S.J., received a Ph.D. in the comparative history of religion from Harvard University. He has lived and taught in Nigeria and Ghana for more than twenty years. Too Advanced for most

a solid book, but nothing special

Patrick Ryan's book on Geometry is not too advanced, give a good introduction, and importantly avoids pedantry and excessive abstraction. At the same time, the notation could be made much more clear, the examples could be better, and there could be much more depth to the book while still keeping it accessible.

However, I do like the organization of the book by kind of Geometry, and comparisons and contrasts between the different geometries in the introduction for each section. But given that I am not a visual thinker, I at least would have preferred more diagrams and explanations about how to think about these topics.

It is a solid book, and not too rigorous, although the notation at times makes it more confusing than it should be, but I am sure that there are much better books out there.

Geometry done in a different way

Most of us who had geometry in school had it done in a purely axiomatic way, basically the way Euclid did it, though updated. This book achieves an exposition of geometry (not only Euclidean, but the non-Euclidean geometries referred to as elliptic and hyperbolic) through other means. The subtitle, "An Analytic Approach" is only a partial explanation of the way the book approaches geometry. Not only the representation of points by coordinates, which is what "analytic" means in a geometric context, is characteristic of the book, but a heavy reliance is made on group theory and linear algebra.

There are other books whose titles are, or include, the terms "transformational geometry." This refers to the concept of the 19th-century German mathematician Felix Klein that a geometry is best considered as a study of those aspects of spaces that are preserved by a set of transformations applied to them. This book, with its heavy dependence on group theory (the mathematics that describes how transformations interact with each other) and linear algebra (the way that analytic geometry deals with transformations), clrarly falls within the family of transformational geometry books, even if the title does not use the word "transformational."

Such subtypes of geometry as affine plane geometry and distance geometry are also well covered. In fact, the book has one of the best treatments of affine geometry i have encountered.

Because of the use of such tools as linear algebra, this book is not appopriate for a high-school student; it is best used by someone with a few years of college mathematics. that is probably the one caveat I would raise.

Mind Blowing ! ! !

I got this book about a month ago, and its become an obsession. Literally I cant put it down. It is mind blowing to say the least. - - Schillinger presents an entire new way of looking at music. It is very relevent for the modern Jazz improviser (Personally, I play Jazz organ and have a penchant for Hard Bop and Soul Jazz.) The jargon does get a bit intimidating at times, but once you sit down with your instrument and fiddle around, whole new worlds open up even if you dont understand it fully. You begin to see the beauty and logic behind some of your favorite compositions. - - I had a ball the first night I read it experimenting with different melodies by doing permutations... Its even helped me figure out all that wierd lingo in the Yusef Lateef book on Scales and Patterns. - - The one thing Ill say though... this book aint for dabblers. You gotta have a lot of time and motivation on your hands. I spend about 12 hours a day at my instrument... and even that aint enough, so for me, the book is great. But if youre not lucky or disciplined enough to have this kind of time however, still are curious about more mathematical ways of envisioning creative Jazz lines, I suggest JIMMY AMADIEs book JAZZ IMPROV: HOW TO PLAY IT; HOW TO TEACH IT.

a nice book but a bit expensive.

this book comes in two volumes and covers a wide range of ideas.
before buying i would suggest buying a pad of graph paper,
as many of joseph schillinger ideas are based upon a graph format.
the downside for me was the price of the books, so if you are to annotate the book i would do it in pencil!
i have found through unearthing these ideas that the principle ideas are allot simpler than they appear on the page, so its always good to keep that in mind.
these books describe the nature of music from a scientific viewpoint (e.g colliding waves, ideas of growth in music in comparison to nature such as the Fibonacci series ect, distributive powers, the coordination of time structures these are are only a small number of ideas in regard to the section upon rhythm and they all come from a mathematical standpoint
many of the same ideas based on rythm will also correspond to pitch.
many great composers such as charles stepney,george gershwin, glen millier ect used this sytem and composers especially in the feild of filmography due to Joseph's Schillinger's ideas based on the semantics of music use thissystem, good luck

a must for every serious contemporary composer and/or improv

although terminology might be a little out-dated(both mathematicaly and musicaly),the book contains an overwhelming number of ideas and aprroaches toowards melody,scales,harmony etc. Some of these ideas have been exploited PARTIALLY {for instance:Coltrane's symetric scales on Giant Steps) in modern music,but there's plenty left for any style of music.As an avid student of modern jazz and fusion improvisation I havn't been able to come across a larger body of knowledge even amongst such Berkley "legends" as goodrick,bergonzi etc.

An entertaining compilation

I read this book, over a 2.5 hr flight. If you've grown up on quizzing, it's easy to understand the lure of such a compilation. Yet, if you like your movies, this will add color and depth to history of Indian cinema.
What I liked about the book, was the thought given to organizing the quiz book into various chapters. For example, I started with the section on "Indian Movies at the Oscars" (Chap 7), and then moved to the "General Movie Quiz" (Chap 9).
Many times the answer to the quiz questions, eluded me. But whichever be the case, it's a great walk down one's own memory lane, as you reminiscence, where you yourself were at the point the events happened.
By the end of the flight, I also ended up building a list of movies to watch (or re-watch).

This guide will give you the important information from the chapters, which will be what you are most likely to see on an exam. I would recommend this product to anyone who is having a hard time understanding Anatomy and Physiology. I enjoyed this book because it broke the text book down into simpler terms and easier way to understand. I especially enjoyed the quizzes for each chapter. It also helped that I took this teacher :)

Nice reference, serves its purpose, but lacks slightly

If I could give this 3.5 stars, I would. It's a handy guide to study and review when you don't want to tote around the 30 lb anatomy textbook (maybe I exaggerate a little). But. It's not as comprehensive as it could be. For example, the book covers blood types and homozygous/heterozygous, phenotype/genotype, etc. If you were to study strictly from this guide, you wouldn't review those things. Also, the integument chapter lists the parts of the nail from top to bottom, so that's very helpful, but it doesn't give a list of all of the parts to the hair. It's an odd combination of being a very effective study tool that sometimes just doesn't quite give enough information.

It's very helpful by putting info into layman's terms, so it helps understand the information without being "wordy" and overwhelming. I just wish it went only slightly more deep into details. Even just a small section about the hair parts or "genotype is what is written on your genes. Phenotype is the thing you can actually see, like your hair color or blood type under a microscope."

Also, it isn't very formal in the way it is written, so there are a few typos and small editing issues, but, I didn't let that affect my rating because overall the book serves the purpose it was written for. I don't think you'd make 100s on tests if you only used this as a study guide, but it's definitely a great chapter review and a nice complement to the textbook.

Great tool for medical career oriented path finders!

I took A&P as a pre-requisite to forward my EMS career to Paramedic. I was told of this book and bought it. It was well written and put together. Michael Harrel, M.S. was also an instructor of my college. Although I didn't have him personally, with this book, he was there right along with my other instructor. The book greatly helped me through my A&P and Lab with flying colors and a A average. I would recommend this book to any medical professional who wants an extra edge on the subject of A&P.
