Really good conclusion to the series

Lastland was a book that could have gone so many ways - there were so many paths that were possible for this story to take. And for all I imagined, I couldn't predict how good this would be. My worry at the end of Monarch was unsubstantiated. This book delivered more than promised and kept me hanging on each word. The story starts off with Kat chasing down the Western forces to retrieve Rune, and after success, she and Varion team up to take out Raserion for once and for all. The biggest motivator for Kat is, of course, the threat that he poses to Haven and so, even though she doesn't trust Varion entirely, she allies with him to seek peace for her Haven.

The war rages on about the middle of the book and that's where the pace drops. It's all strategy for a while, and was about to start getting boring, when we move towards the main showdown. Kat goes above and beyond her powers, and I was honestly terrified what turn the book would take. The writing painted a very vivid image of war - and when we reach Haven, it goes to newer heights. The ending was, unexpected, to say the least. It was a good resolution to the story and honestly, very well deserved towards our characters. It also settles the world really well, and gives hope for a happily ever after, just slightly marred by remnants of war.

As for this series, it has been a delight. It has been unexpected and surprising, but in a good way. It kept me engaged and hooked, and I have devoured each of them until my eyes hurt from lack of sleep. (Which means it was that awesome) It was such a good start to the year for me, and the world-building, characters, and storyline have been nearly flawless. The romance was also, finally, given it's due - still in the background, but with a better understanding of Rune. Kat is still drawn to wounded people, but perhaps that her real nature - to see the whole of people and kindle hope in them. Just amazing, in short.

It offered a wonderful resolution for our characters and the world they inhabit

With Prince Varion, ruler of the Northern Kingdom, "reclaiming" his place, he is determined to end the war that has divided Lastland for 700 years. While Katelyn is torn as she tries to reconcile the boy she knew with the prince before her, she knows that Haven's future and that of Lastland hangs in trusting Prince Varion.

First, she must save Rune. Will saving him rid him of the Gateling that still clings to his body? Will Katelyn reach Haven in time to save the people? Will she try to burn to brightly and snuff her own light out?

This book is very battle heavy, but what would one expect? I can say that it didn't detract at all from the story for me personally. This final book in the story was perfection. It offered a wonderful resolution for our characters and the world they inhabit. It was nice to see everything wrapped up nicely with a few surprises that didn't disappoint.

The series as a whole is one of the best I've ever read, and I couldn't possibly recommend these books more highly.

Exciting and satisfiying conclusion to a great series.

I always struggle trying to write a review for later book in a series. I figure those who haven't read any of the books yet would be checking out the first in the series to see if it appeals to them, and those who have read and enjoyed the others in the series are already likely to pick up the next one. I also try to avoid spoilers, and it's difficult to avoid spoilers for previous books.

What readers who have not yet read these books may want to know is if the subsequent books are as good as the first, and if the ending is satisfying. It's so disappointing to invest in a series only to be let down and feel disappointed in the end. In my opinion each book in this series becomes better, and those who enjoy the first should enjoy the rest and feel the ending satisfying, as I did.

I found the story to be very imaginative and unique, it fits best I think as Young Adult Fantasy, but isn't simply a cookie-cutter story. There's adventure, danger, power struggles, deceptions, twists, and a dash of romance.

Finishing this book I felt that bittersweet feeling familiar to readers of coming to the end of time spent with characters who came to feel like good friends.

In "Lastland" Kat remains loyal to her friends, and stubbornly true to her goal to protect her beloved homeland of Haven, no matter what is thrown in her way. And quite a bit conspires to try to stop her. Although she has grown in confidence and experience she remains still believable as a real person, with doubts, fears, struggles to do what is best and right. I liked her quite a bit. I also appreciated the fact that although there is a romantic aspect in the story it never takes over the story, never derails the plot or becomes too much the focus, but rather is seasoning to add flavor.

I am so glad I discovered this series, enjoyed it immensely. And I look forward to seeing what else this author comes up with in the future.

Alright

Have the author as the professor for my law school class. Explains the law in a succinct manner and liked the way the professor used the book in the class. I'm unsure as it how it would stand on its own though, without the accompanying text book, but its purpose for the class was just a supplement. One way to improve is to have "sample answers" to the scenarios or at least an outline of the answers to the questions presented. Overall, its a pretty good reference and I will probably end up keeping it instead of selling it back to the book store.

Ninja Death Touch Review

Like most other martial arts books I come across, details are sorely needed. The Ninja Death Touch book covers some of the acupuncture points at the very surface level. It tells the reader what is possible when someone masters the art, but does not tell the reader HOW to master it. So anyone who buys the book thinking that the book will teach the person to master the art of ninjitsu will be very disappointed. It is only after I've learnt Tai Chi and chi kung that I understand how deceptive books on martial arts are. It is important to know where the pressure points are on the human body, but more important is the ability to direct or channel your 'chi' or energy to parts of your body so that any part of your body essentially becomes a weapon. Also, the ability to direct your 'chi' allows you to use minimum force for maximum damage. Books are by no means a substitute for a master.

He writes for the influential Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram Weekly, is married, and lives in London.
