About the Author
Scott Mallon is perhaps best known for his YouTube channel, An American in Bangkok. As an expat living in Thailand since November 1995, he has also worked as a boxing and travel photojournalist for numerous publications, including HBO Sports, the Bangkok Post, The Ring, Boxing Digest, Boxing News and the Phuket Gazette. He is a past member of the Boxing Writers Association of America, Ring Magazine’s Rating Panel, Yahoo’s Boxing Rating Panel and was formerly the editor of Asian Boxing News. In 2007, the Boxing Writers Association of America awarded him with an honorary mention for investigative reporting. He lives in Bangkok full-time with his Thai wife Beau, their sons Alex and Nicholas, and dogs Lala and Odie.

Disappointing...

Finding this book extremely hard to read... I enjoyed watching Scott's videos, even when I disagreed with some of his viewpoints, but his book comes across as extremely narcissistic. The writing is simple and novice, and even page is filled with profanity for seemingly no reason. I don't mind profanity either, but the over-the-top and pointless usage of the profanity is ridiculous. Most of the book seems to be the stuff he has regurgitated/rehashed from his videos and placed in the book(except much more vulgar), so if you've watched his videos you won't find much new.

There's no real flow or rhythm from the transition of short stories in the book. Just kind of patched together stories where Scott recollects his move to Thailand and foray with Thai women. The way that his stories are written are extremely chauvinistic and many parts are downright disrespectful to women in general. Much of his advice is very poor as well or very basic and inarticulate... you can tell he has been out of the game for too long.

It's a shame that he didn't write with a little more class (like cutting the profanity down about 75%) and not putting women down on every flip of the page or tooting his own horn so often. Also would have been much more readable if he just written in a traditional biography style rather than patched together stories that are trying very hard to be a partial biography. Also the book is extremely short! Like you could read this in 2-3 hours if you are a decent reader. I am glad I was able to get this on Kindle Unlimited as I would've been pissed if I paid $8.99 for it. It is worth $0.99-$1.99 tops.

Great little book, worth it!

This little book is highly worth it, on two or more levels. First off I found it an easy read, flows quite quickly actually. Very entertaining, some quite funny. And many real life lessons to be learned if one gives it some thought. Does this mean I agree with everything in the book? Do you agree with everything on your favorite TV seasonal show? No! Of course not, things do not need to be perfect in order to be entertained or receive life lessons.

Essential Street-Smarts for Romatics Visiting Thailand -- Warning: Some Coarse Language, Violence and Nudity.

I've been reading "They Call Me Farang" in bits and episodes on the public transit and before I crash out. I have finally closed the back cover of this book now, and I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it -- It is a quick read because it is a page-turner. It must have been a tough job editing everything down into the select events, personal soul searching and advice to the well intended naive.
I look forward to a possible sequel with more entertaining true stories such as "The Texan" and "One Last Fight" and "When You Gotta Go, Go". I think I can safely assume that Scott Mallon has a lot of great stories to tell that weren't included in this work, including stories that others have perhaps related to him. This book of short stories / memoirs focusses on an inner journey loaded with humour, philosophical insight and advice for the guys.
I have personally travelled extensively throughout Thailand and I can attest that Scott Mallon isn't making any of this up. The book's audience is the guys, but I think that open minded women might enjoy reading this as well. I have heard girl talk and it can get pretty scary; so this is guy talk at its nastiest, funniest and most heartfelt.
Oh yes, the bar maidens are lovely, flattering and often enjoyable story tellers, and even fine teachers of the culture. Thailand is a wonderful place filled with everything from awesome vistas to lovely people. However, there is a dark underbelly filled with danger and intrigue. There is a sad history that lead to the sex trade that I would like to see Scott Mallon touch upon in his upcoming literary offerings. I hope he will address some stories from the bar maid and sex trade worker's point of view; but this book is what it is, and "They Call Me Farang" is a solid warning. As one Thai lady friend said to me, "You new farangs think you know everything, but you know nothing."
Mallon has put in the years, done the learning curve, and he understands the Thai culture, the language, the ways of the street, the "good bad and ugly". He has the greatest respect for this country, the people and the culture . . . but he warns us over and over . . . Well, I don't want to be a spoiler; so I suggest that before you venture into this magical place, read this collection of short stories, enjoy and take heed.
The quotes at the beginning of each chapter are well researched and make perfect introductions to each episode. I especially like the quote, "In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years" [Abraham Lincoln]. There is also an abundance of original Scott Mallon quotables throughout the chapters. Do read the works of historians, great classic writers, study the maps, learn the survival phrases and so on; but if you are planning on hitting the street running, despite a couple of minor publisher typos, "They Call Me Farang" is, in my sincere opinion, essential reading.

An excellent introduction to a world unknown in the West.

The author covers every aspect of Kurdish life, especially religion quite well. The book is a good approximation of the country studies available from the library of congress on the various recognized independent states.
Since Kurdistan is not recognized as an independent state, it does not have a library of congress handbook. As a replacement, Izady's book is a good substitute.
There are a few difficulties and inaccuracies in the book, but given its size and its attempt to cover such a long span of history, these mistakes can be forgiven. For example, the claim that Armenian King Tigranes II The Great was of Kurdish origin is at best very debatable. The King is a central figure in Armenian history, and Izady's initial words seemed to be aimed at attacking Armenian history. But he quickly repairs this potential point of contention and clearly points out that the King probably regarded himself as an Armenian whatever his origins may have been.
In addition to bringing to life history that is treated as a taboo subject in Turkey, Iraq and other Middle Eastern and even some Western states. Izady does a great deal to shatter the image of religious conformity in the region. We learn of the Yazidis, the Cult of angels, the Alevis, the Syrian Arab Alawites (Nusayris), and other groups including Kurdish Christians.
This book is a must-read for every United States Middle Eastern policy maker, because it draws a clear, accurate flesh and blood picture of a people long-maligned, massacred and misunderstood. Every American analyst interested in learning more about the Kurds, their life, survival, tragedies and triumphs should read this book as a introduction to this remarkable nation.

The Kurds: A Concise Handbook

Although 8 years old, this still remains the best book I have ever read about the Kurds. We Armenians know very little, and that also so biased, when it comes to our neighbors the Kurds. I think this book should be made a mandatory reading in all the Armenian schools.
The book is like an encyclopedia and the author is successful in not taking any political side. He is also respectful to the Armenians and their Genocide in which as Izady writes, the Kurdish tribal leaders took part with the Turks. His treatment of the Kurdish culture, art and history is as fascinating as his coverage of politics, religion, langauge and demography. It is an excellent resource.
It is a pitty that this book is not more widely known or available in the Armenian language. I wished the publishers of the book would consider translating and publishing this into other languages too and not just English.

The Ultimate Reference!

This book is the ultimate reference when it comes to the Kurds and all aspects of their life. The analysis is deep, academic, and far from biased. Although some of the historical facts Professor Izady provides need to be prooved, the historical research seems very miticulous. Although this book serves its purpose perfectly, such a small handbook isn't enough to eliminate the numerous common misconceptions and fallacies about the Kurds and their history. We need a far more detailed book with more proofs about what it states, and I hope that Izady's next book will be like that. Anyway, despite being a bit outdated, this is the finest refernce on the Kurds available so far. Highly Recommended!!

The Jesus Code by O.S. Hawkins
The Jesus Code by O. S. Hawkins is basically a series of questions. Fifty-two questions, to be exact. Hawkins takes 52 essential questions from the Bible and asks them of the reader. Thankfully, he also provides background, context, and answers from scripture. The questions Hawkins addresses are ones that believers need to understand and be prepared to answer. Many of them are questions asked by Jesus within the Bible. The format of the book is simple to follow. Hawkins begins with the question and the verse of scripture from which it is taken. He then provides the context and background for the question. What was happening at the time the question was asked? Who was involved? It is important to see the cultural context and understand the purpose of the question. He then ties the question into a more modern context and looks at ways it may apply to modern believers. He wraps up each chapter by repeating the question with a summarized answer.The introduction states the book is set up into 52 chapters, allowing for readers to study one chapter a week for a year, really taking time to dig into each question, go back into the Bible and read the references, and pray over the answers. I enjoyed reading this book. Each chapter was short enough to fit into a small window of devotional time in the morning, yet the concepts covered required much more thought. The book was easy to follow, and it felt as if I were having a conversation with the author each morning as I read. The questions covered topics ranging from what new believers must do, to following the Holy Spirit. This would be a great book to give to new believers to help guide them into Bible study. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to deepen their relationship with God. 52 Scripture questions every believer should answer. The Jesus Code provides a whole year of personal devotion, small group study, couple(s) ministry and questions we should answer. Out of hundreds of questions in the Bible O.S. Hawkins chooses 52 for this book (one for every week of the year). They all were thought provoking with questions from both the Old Testament and New Testament.

He begins with the serpent putting doubt in Eve’s mind by asking “Has God indeed said?” from week one. We see in week nine Solomon about to be crowned as King asking God to give him wisdom. Week 15 we get the question “Will we live again?” and the answer an emphatic “Yes!”. All through the pages are questions, answers and scriptures. We learn about the virtuous wife, resentment, tithing, worry, fear, neighbors and how Jesus fed thousands with a few loaves of bread and a couple fish. Peter boasted that he would never betray Jesus however, he did so three times. Then the risen Jesus posed a question to him and to us, “Do you love Me more than these?”. O.S. Hawkins finalizes the book with the way of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.

You will be probed and prodded when reading this book. I would recommend this to anyone that may be questioning their faith, their existence or their way. This is a tool to use in any devotional or Bible study.

Great for your Southern Baptist Friends

The Jesus Code by Dr O S Hawkins is the subject of our review today. I was impressed immediately by the cover of this book. The book is bound in Imitation Leather and is absolutely gorgeous. Its soft and has an all around good feel and is a pretty decent size. It would be a perfect fit for the side table or among your coffee table literature.

Onto the heart of the Book. The books premise is that it takes 52 questions and uses scripture to provide an answer and reflection for you. The 52 Questions format should be no surprise as it is designed in a way that makes it a perfect fit as a devotional or as a tool for bible study.

I must admit that this book is not a fit for me, but not for any reason other than philosophical. Let me explain that a bit. Dr. Hawkins is a Southern Baptist and his writing and philosophy comes from that place. So when he takes a scripture and answers a question it is coming from a place that I am clearly not. So this book is definitely not one that I would recommend for Catholics, Anglo-Catholics, or anyone who is not a Conservative Evangelical.

However, having said that, it is a well written book and its coming from a man who holds a MDiV from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary which is one of the more prominent colleges for Baptists in the United States. So this man knows what hes talking about from his denomination and even if we are not of that stretch of cloth, we know family or friends that are and this book would make an impressive gift for them.
