I bought the Kindle for PC version of this text. If you are buying the Kindle version of this book, beware. The resolution of the images is such that you can not read the accompanying text (the text that is part of the image). The pictures themselves are difficult to view. As this is a histology textbook, this is a MAJOR PROBLEM. Frankly, I'm surprised they offer this text in this version.

I really am not sure why they include images that are not in the original form with the original quality. It makes a good portion of this text useless. I called support for Kindle for PC and there is no solution.

Happily, I can get this purchase refunded. However, I'll be desperately squinting until my test on Thursday, trying to get what I can from this. Not enough time to buy the hard copy at this point. My eyes hurt.

Excellent textbook for histology students

I would recommend this book for anyone taking histology in medical school or undergrad. I am a med student and found this book much easier to learn from compared to other textbooks I have read. The author writes in a fashion that enhances learning. The pictures are also very good and helped me to further visualize the types of epithlia. I studied from the following which is also on amazon.com:

This second book was so amazing because it had the kind of questions I saw on my histology exams. My study group and I used both these books and we all passed with ease and with less study time. Time is money. It's better to invest in a couple of excellent books than to take a $2500 class all over again. I give both books 6 stars!!!!!

Great book for histology class

The pictures were the selling point in this book. It did go a little too far in depth for my histology class at the time, talking about subunit x of protein y connects to this subunit in this way. However, it became more useful when I got to phys and path. The diagrams were everything, and they supplemented the text well. It did not have as many real microscopic pictures as Wheaters, but I found the drawings more useful than just staring at a light pink blob by a darker pink blob.

Work deserves ten stars. Lucid, fair, trenchant, erudite, comprehensive and touching. Presents a mountain of detail with a clear path and a marvelous view at the summit. Contents -

Perry writes so smoothly the reader doesn't feel the movement. Just brought to the next destination before he realizes he left the previous one. Great!

Purpose of this work is to explain the breakdown of western civilization after 1914.

''The war said British poet Robert Graves provoked an ''inward scream'' that still reverberates.'' (378)

''The First World War was difficult to fit into the picture of a rational civilization advancing by ordered stages. The civilized men of the twentieth century had outdone in savagery the barbarians of all previous ages, and their civilized virtues - organization, mechanical skill, self-sacrifice - had made war's savagery all the more terrible. Modern man had developed powers he was not fit to use. European civilization had been weighed in the balance and found wanting.'' (379) Perry trusts in the Enlightenment. He is deeply disappointed, feels betrayed. In contrast, Christ trusted in God. Christians went to the lions for him. We can hope for the return he promised.

Notes Brzezinski's view totalitarian movements are '' 'historically unique and sui generis', - different in nature from ancient oriental despotisms, the Roman Empire, the tyrannies of the Reinaissance city-states, or the absolute monarchies of modern Europe. 'Broadly speaking, totalitarian dictatorship is a new development; there has never been anything quite like it before.' '' (389)

Perry's insight on antisemitism is fascinating! ''In exterminating the Jewish people, the Nazi's believed that they were righteous souls defending the sacred Volk and civilization itself from fiendish foes. They were also symbolically destroying the essential values of the Enlightenment tradition - reason, freedom, equality, toleration, compassion and individualism - which they despised and which the Jews were identified. They were also trying to cut out the very root of Western civilization's ethical tradition, which Hitler and the SS regarded as a mortal danger to Nazi racial ideology.'' (398) This explanation makes the holocaust a religious (ideological) war.

Quoting a catholic priest: ''. . .ethical Judaism invented and introduced, through Christianity in particular], an ethic of absolute respect for life, of the equal worth of man. It invented, as Hitler himself said, ''Consience''. This ethic is totally incompatible with the idea of a heirarchy of rases. Hitler also knew Judaism introduced monotheism into the history of humanity. This monotheism is unacceptable. Because of its ''moral demands'' it . . . . is a radical condemnation of all idolatries and therefore the ideology of race. So the Jews had to be eliminated. . .for what their existence symbolized.'' (398) (See also George Steiner - In Bluebeard's Castle)

As the preface explains: ''The nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries are treated in relation to the promise (and limitation) of the Enlightenment. The text strives to interpret, structure, and synthesize in order to provide readers with a frame of reference with which to comprehend the evolution of modern European thought.'' Perry succeeds.

However, Perry's faith in the Enlightenment is almost gone. Why? ''The Holocaust reveals a depth of wickedness and irrationality in human beings that compel thinking people to question the basic assumptions of Enlightenment humanism: the efficacy of reason, science, and education, and the essential goodness of human nature. The venerable humanist tradition of learning, high culture, and cultivated taste proved to be a very fragile barrier against human bestiality. How do we explain the fact that commanders of the 'Einsatzgruppen' - the murder squads that slaughtered some two million Russian Jews - 43 percent had of whom had doctorate degrees, ''were among the most highly educated of all the leaders of the third Reich''? That several prominent figures in the bureaucracy of death listened to ot played Mozart and Beethoven, read Goethe, visited art museums?'' (400) I find this astonishing! Perry really believes (pre Holocaust) that Mozart creates an elite moral person. Amazing.

Nevertheless, Perry presents contrasting opinions in a fair and clear manner. Even though his bias for the Enlightenment and Greek 'reason' is overtly stated, he is not arrogant. He presents the Judeo-Christian morality and belief with respect. Pascal, Marx, Dostoevsky, Kant, Decarte, etc., etc., are all here. Astounding!

Numerous photographs of famous thinkers. Each chapter contains several dozen references to sources referred to in the text. Sixteen page index. Table of contents serves as excellent summary.

Fabulous advice!

This book is great! It offers easy (and really cheap - or free) solutions to take your best photo ever. I've been in the beauty/modeling world for over 15 years and I learned lots of new things. By making small changes suggested in the book, people are really noticing something is different. And the shaving tips (not your legs!) make a HUGE difference!

At 30...

As my 30th birthday nears, I found that I was still painting myself up as if I were still 16. I needed some guidance, badly, and I got a great send off on my journey with this book. Its great for women who are finally being introduced to new modern ways to look good. Until I read it I had no idea I had an oval face, I mean I never thought of it as oval. I learned more about my skins needs and ways to protect it amid all the things done to make it more presentable. I got wise to some interesting tricks that I have been able to integrate into my routine and wonderful tips on how to be lovely in photos. It is a very helpful book and if I had the cash I would buy it for all my friends still stuck in 1999.

A great little read!

This book was well written and impressive for a first-time author. Goodstein has a positive, down to earth attitude that is encouraging. She's put a lot of thought and personal experience into each chapter. She helps you to be aware of important factors such as: hair, make up, lighting, facial expression and body positioning. Her instruction is easy to understand and the book includes helpful photographs to illustrate her points. She even has a few interesting tips that are usually not discussed in beauty magazines! It's a good read for anyone wanting to improve their photogenic quality or understand the basics of digital photography! I'm ready for my close-up!

Excellent and engaging text

I am so pleased! My daughter adored working out of this book at her old school, so I wanted to keep it going as we homeschooled. The book arrived so incredibly fast and is in exactly the condition promised (honestly, better condition than was promised). The super fast shipping means she was only a couple of days without her social studies text, which makes this mom happy. My favorite thing about this book is how it has lit a fire in my little girl. She cannot stop talking about all the things she's been learning.

This religio-political ecclesiology, sharpened by an emerging Christian material culture and a growing sense of Christian «sacred space», influenced the way Christians interpreted the Jewish Scriptures typologically. In seeing the nation of Israel as a divine nation corresponding to themselves, Christians began appropriating the Levitical priesthood as a figure or «type» of the Christian ministerial office. Such a study helpfully broadens our understanding of the emergence of a Christian priesthood beyond pagan imitation or narrow focus on the sacrificial nature of the Eucharist, and instead offers a more comprehensive explanation in connection with early Christian ecclesiology.

Bryan A. Steward received his BA in religion from Grove City College (Grove City, PA) and his MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO). He completed his PhD in patristics and early Christianity from the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA). After completing his doctoral work, he was awarded a two-year Lilly post-doctoral teaching and research fellowship at Valparaiso University (Valparaiso, IN). Currently Stewart is Associate Professor of Religion at McMurry University (Abilene, TX), where he teaches the history of Christian thought.
