It's a no for me

I have troubled feelings about this one. It kind of looks like a Young Adult novel, which I’m fine with! A girl goes to a foreign country and meets a prince and falls in love: it’s a standard fairy tale and I’m on board if it makes me feel like a princess. But something about the tone or style sent mixed messages to my brain, and I couldn’t really get into the fantasy until almost the end.

Em is on vacation with her three sequel-bait friends in a small country called Garronia. She swims in the ocean, gets trapped by the current, and is rescued by a military guy. He pulls her to shore, and then they make out, like you do. He’s then whisked away. It turns out he’s the crown prince of Garronia, oh my heck!

But this is not a YA novel, in that its characters are in their twenties. Em is a grad school dropout because her parents were in a car crash and she takes care of them. She’s very responsible, and very obligated to her family, and this vacation is the only fun she plans on having for a very long time. She loves fairy tales, so when her friends point out that she kissed a prince, she calls herself Princess Emmaline (in her head) and agrees to tour the castle just for kicks.

Kristos has a “surly attitude and battle-worn body.” He was the younger son of a king, and he went into the military. Then his brother died in an accident, and his mean parents are making him assume his royal duties. He whines a lot about it.

The media figures out who Em is, and before you can say Princess Diana, she and her friends are moved into the castle for safekeeping. The country is very invested in Kristos’s love life, you see. Kristos whisks Em away to a secret villa, on the back of a motorcycle, and they talk about their challenging lives and their duties and how they like to kiss.

Then they have sex. Explicit enough that this is definitely not YA. Afterwards, Em falls asleep, and Kristos decides that he should sneak out of the villa and creep up on his bodyguard, just to keep up with his ninja skills or something. That was a big No for me. After sex, the guy must always stay and cuddle and be grateful, unless bad guys knock down the door. But Kristos just hopped out the window.

Here’s my second, even bigger, No.

“No condom.

She closed her eyes as well so he wouldn’t see her surprise – or the completely non-PC sense of triumph that surged through her. They weren’t using protection. And she was always the careful one, with all those dotted i’s and crossed t’s… But Princess Emmaline Aurora Grace didn’t have to worry about things like safety. Not with a vaunted prince of the realm.”

It’s like, is this a fairy tale or is this supposed to be reality? Because princes can knock you up or give you an STD as easily as Joe the Mechanic can, no matter how triumphant you feel. Whatever, Princess.

Kristos sees Em as different from all the other girls, and fragile-yet-strong, and he’s kind of cocky and he speaks like a George Hamilton vampire: “I have never kissed your shoulder, you see. And so here already is something new that you might teach me.”

So, no.

I'm too old for this stuff ... BUT I LOVED IT

Jennifer Chance came up with an adorably spicy Romantic New Adult novel that I am flat out WILD ABOUT!!! "Courted" will have you Smitten with a capital "S"! The Zings start flying on page 6 and the tender kisses on page 18 - Wait. What??? Yes! Delectable! The heroine is a talented violinist, but she is also the type of person who takes care of everyone except herself. The only escape she allows herself is in a daydream land of mermaids and princesses. The hero is a soldier who finds himself in the position of having to step in and become the crown prince of his country when he would rather be leading his men on a mission. Both are emotionally where they are due to accidents that affected their respective families, and put them in roles of responsibility - which took them away from the things they loved. Not only is "Courted" about Love at First Sight but it is also about Responsibility, Friendship, Happiness, and Family.
I really shouldn't LOVE this novel as much as I do. I am definitely no in the target demographic "Courted" is aiming for. But I am enchanted by the storyline. I'm swoony over Kristos. Emmaline is wonderful. Lauren is SIMPLY FABULOUS! Fran is great and I want more Nicki - because those two (especially Nicki) didn't get enough time for me to know them, KNOW them. The queen is a legend- dary! Dimitri is a total BRO. I loved the characters, settings, and even though I shouldn't the super-duper Love-At-First-Sight whirlwind storyline. "Courted" is a delightful, marvelous fairytale of a New Adult Romance. I cannot wait for Jennifer Chance's next installment of the Crowns and Gowns series!

Hard to stay focused

The story was cute...but the writing made it very hard to follow and stay focused on the story. Most of the time when I read a book I am pulled in and find any available time to sneak in a few pages to find out what is next. With this book I keep hoping that would happen, but instead it was choppy and weirdly written and it was a push to finish. 2stars for the concept but not much else.

Fantastic book for open wheel race fanatics..

Dr Steve Olvey has done a wonderful job at putting us behind the sceens in a place only a few ever know about. This is not a book for the faint of heart, it tells it like it is. The men and women who are first response and emergency meds are to be commended for the amazing work they do. Many owe their lives to the Rapid Response they have received, and the fans owe a debt of gratitude for keeping our heroes of the race racing another day.

Informative book about safety in American Open Wheel Racing

I have been a racing fan my entire life, and have seen several references to Dr. Olvey's book on various racing message boards and even on YouTube videos in recent years. This book is a must read for fans of American open wheel racing at any point from the early 1970s to the mid-2000s.

Alex Zanardi wrote a foreword for the book, and Dr. Olvey's graphic explanation of Zanardi's life-altering crash in Germany as well as Gordon Smiley's fatal crash at Indy make the book, IMO. The book is divided into 38 chapters, with nearly every chapter between 4-10 pages in length and dealing with either a specific accident or one aspect of how technology has made racing safer over the past 40 years.

Most of the fatal accidents in CART/American open wheel racing (Smiley, Swede Savage, Jim Hickman, Jeff Krosnoff, Greg Moore, Gonzalo Rodriguez) over the past 40 years are dealt with in a non-sensational manner. Who knew that Savage actually died from a bad blood transfusion? But the book also contains lots of stories with happier endings. For example, I knew Rick Mears' feet-crushing crash at Sanair (Que.) in 1984 was bad, but I never knew that French-Canadian doctors initially wanted to amputate both of Mears' feet. Mears subsequently came back and won Indy twice more after doctors wanted to remove his feet.

Maybe this is a bit self-serving by Dr. Olvey, but NASCAR clearly comes across as a donkey series safety-wise right up until Dale Earnhardt died in 2001. When Jim Hickman died due to a stuck throttle sending him straight into the concrete wall at the Milwaukee Mile in 1982, CART reponded immediately by mandating an engine "kill switch" easily accessible to drivers on the steering wheel. NASCAR took nearly 20 years and Adam Petty dying due to a stuck throttle to institute the same rule.

Again, perhaps this is a bit self-serving but Dr. Olvey relayed that in the 1970s and '80s, safety in NASCAR was so sketchy and the medical teams staffing those races were such a mixed bag that A.J. Foyt would often pay out of his own pocket to have Dr. Olvey accompany him to races when he ran with NASCAR.

The book also served as a reminder of just how big major open-wheel racing in America was before the IRL/CART split caused an entire generation of fans to stop caring.

The book is a must-read for any fan of American open wheel racing. Even beyond the safety aspect of the book, Dr. Olvey tells so many great anecdotes, particularly involving Foyt and his pathological fear of the color green among other stories.

Dr. Stephen Olvey served as Championship Auto Racing Teams' medical director from 1979 to 2003. This very moving memoir of his years leading the charge for motor sports safety in the series at the pinnacle of open wheel racing in America recaptures an exciting era in the development of technology, both in motor racing and in sports medicine. With professionalism, sincerity, empathy and humor, Olvey recounts the challenges, rewards and devastating losses of forwarding safety in the sport.

On a personal note, I have had the distinct honor of knowing Olvey during most of his tenure with CART, and have heard many of these stories directly from him and Dr. Trammel. Many of the people he writes about are friends of mine and I was present during most of the racing accidents he describes (and several he doesn't mention). For me, it is a bittersweet reminder of the history of my own life in motor sports.

This is a wonderful anthology of Yiddish fiction, poetry, and essays from the Litvak (present day Lithuania, N. E. Poland, Belarus) cultural zone centered on Vilnius (Yiddish: Vilne). The content is rich, and the vocabularies appended to each selection are useful; there are also good historical and biographical notes written by the author. This is an excellent book for the intermediate-advanced Yiddish reader, either to be gone through on one's own or in a class/reading group setting. The only reason for giving it four stars and not five lies in the typography; the type size of the selections is small (perhaps equivalent to 10 point type in English), and that of the vocabularies is tiny. Definitely a drawback for older readers (and many Yiddish students are 50+), who may have to resort to copying/scanning and enlarging the print. It is to be hoped that a less expensive and more readable paperback edition will appear in the future, making this fine book accessible to a larger audience.
