It's not a diet, it is a new lifestyle

I've been doing the Gracie family's style of jiu jitsu for many years. Because of the intensity of the exercise, I was usually able to keep my weight in check in spite of my bad diet. While dealing with an injury that left me unable to do jiu jitsu for a while, my weight ballooned. That is when I decided to try the Gracie diet.

In this book, Rorion Gracie has done a nice job of explaining the full diet and its underlying philosophy. As a scientist, I find the lack of scientific evidence troublesome, but as someone who has trained with several members of the Gracie family over the years, I acknowledge that this diet has been "proven" in a different way. The Gracie family ages well. They manage to stay in amazing shape into their later years, and it is hard to attribute all of this to exercise alone.

I've been on the diet for four months. I have taken off more than 30 pounds. It has also had some remarkable side effects. First, I have struggled with stomach problems for my whole adult life, and they have largely disappeared since going on the Gracie diet. Second, the borderline high blood pressure I have had for many years has plummeted. I am also just starting to round the bend toward internalizing the Gracie lifestyle. The food commercials that used to make me salivate are now starting to turn my stomach. I get this oddly high feeling going through the grocery line with a cart full of fruits and vegetables while everyone else is buying processed crap food. I have internalized the feeling that my body is a place worth protecting and I don't want to poison it with the foods I've been eating my whole life.

This presents some unique challenges. I travel a lot for work and in some places it is impossible to stay on the diet. I have one particularly frustrating memory of walking endlessly through the streets of Springfield, Illinois looking for fruit because the hotel restaurant served only junk food. My mealtimes no longer line up with anyone else's, which can be a logistical challenge with family, friends, and colleagues. Also, some cultures place a lot of value in food and get their feelings hurt when you won't eat what they are offering. So yes, there are many challenges.

At the same time, my young daughter now begs for "banana ice cream" (frozen bananas run through the food processor) like it is some type of forbidden treat (a tip from Rorion). My teenage son now shares my breakfast of pureed grapes, acai berries, and coconut. In other words, my turn toward a healthier life is now infecting my whole family. So I've been able to share this wonderful adventure and I feel like I have barely gotten started.

I recommend buying this book, but as a supplement, make sure to check the web page for the Gracie diet. I use a lot of the recipes in the videos, and also learned some new skills, like how to open avocados, coconuts, and madjool dates.
