Kage, by Maris Black

My name is Jamie Atwood, and I'm an addict. I never thought I'd say such a thing. Never had a problem being overly attached to anything in my life. I came from a perfectly middle-class family, made good grades, and had a hot cheerleader girlfriend...but the truth is, nothing ever really moved me.

So how did a guy like me become an addict? I met Michael Kage. Kage is an MMA fighter. A famous one. I like to think I helped him get that way. He's charming as hell, with looks to rival any movie star and talent to back it up. So why did he need to hire me as an intern publicist? Simple. He has a darkness in him - like a black hole so deep it could swallow him and me and everyone we know - and that's not good for business. The first time I met him, I felt the pull. I think the addiction began at that very moment. And even if I'd known then what I know now, I would have fallen for him. How could I not? For me, Kage is everything.

I am a huge fan of Maris Black and the SSU boys series. While KAGE is not directly part of the series, Jamie is a student at the same university. I love that the author created a universe and that there is a correlation between all of her books.

KAGE is an interesting book, different than the others by this author, where most of her characters were gay or questioning at the very least. Jamie seems to have this unwavering belief that he is straight, he doesn’t even question himself when he checks out a guy at the gym, or when he cuddles up to Michael Kage when he didn’t do that with his girlfriend. After some time with spent with Michael, Jamie submits to his attraction for the MMA fighter but there is still a question of his sexuality.

Michael Kage is a tough, no holds barred fighter. At one point in time he drags out a fight just to end it in the way and time decided by Jamie. Yet he is clearly troubled by his past and I had to wonder if becoming a UFC fighter is really his dream or someone elses.

The two have combustible chemistry and it is fascinating to watch them try to figure each other out. They also blow out spectacularly when they fight. There is a pretty big cliffhanger ending and I know some people have trouble with those. Michael and Jamie are worth the wait, though. August will feel like it takes forever to get here, but I don’t regret reading the first book. A good writer can create a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more without the anger, and I think Maris Black did that.

I Need Book Two!
By Alicia Nordwell
Kage, as a solo book, was a three and a half star read for me. When I read the description, I expected grit, sweat, and some raw passion. The book does deliver that... but not really til the end, which sort of cuts off in a rather random location to leave readers dangling with a cliffhanger. The good news? Round two is supposed to come out in August, and I will definitely be looking for it and round 3 as soon as they come out!

If I had to guess, Kage was originally written as a much longer single piece that is being broken up for publication. In many ways, I'd really like to read that original version. Partly because I hate waiting for something when I want to know what happens next in a story, lol, and partly because I'd like to see what the overall plot arc was. If that wasn't written this way, I'm not sure why the author set the story arc the way she did, because the ending didn't feel like any sort of natural conclusion to the events that preceded it to give readers that satisfaction of the beginning, middle, end yet keep us wanting more for each installment of the series.

While I have quibbles on the plot arc, and the story could've used another proofing to find those final typos like missing or incorrect dialogue punctuation, I found those detracted little from my interest in main characters, Kage and Jamie, who excellently portrayed. They had very distinct personalities that led me to like both of them, and when they finally came together it was an explosive combination. The groundwork is laid for the addict vibe Jamie is sharing in the story description, and there are depths to both characters that make them feel very realistic, which is vital in a contemporary story to keep readers interested. Kage, in particular, has a lot of layers to peel back, and that's not easy at all. He has secrets, for all he seems to be the one who is less likely to hide when it comes to their relationship.

Overall, I really liked Kage more than Jamie, actually, though we get very little of him for much of the early parts of the book. The tension between Jamie and Kage kept me up reading til 2 AM, and I began reading again as soon as I got up until I reached 'The End', but I wish I was able to read the series installments back to back. I think the most enjoyment for readers will be found that way, especially if you like really long stories like I do. If you can hold off, I'd buy each one as they come out and add it to your TBR pile once round 3 of the story comes out. If you can't, well... just expect to be sitting on the edge of your seat to find out what comes next for a few months!

Fantastic! Ripping good Romance with mind-blowing sexual tension!!!
By Pinkerbelle Rex
Maris Black has created a sizzling, enthralling, and entertaining story in KAGE, the first book of a trilogy featuring mixed martial artist, Michael Kage, and young, want-to-be-publicist, Jamie Atwood. Revealed through the eyes of fresh-out-of-college Jamie, the story is a fascinating combination of intrigue, innocence, brawn, and steam and kept me riveted to the page with each interaction between these two smoking hot men. I absolutely loved this story and eagerly look forward to the second book.

Jamie is wonderful as the golden boy-next-door whose untamed ambition, charm, and good looks have allowed him to slip through life unscathed and with little conflict. I found his bravado and naïveté quite apropos for his age and it was much fun to wear his skin on this adventurous joyride. Kage is equally engaging as the gifted “streetfighter” martial artist who seeks entrance into the larger arena of the UFC world. I loved that Kage, too, holds a taciturn reluctance to his “gift” that hinted at a degree of vulnerability inside his exquisitely wrought god of a body. Kage appears to be wounded in some intrinsic manner, and his inner conflict may result from the smothering shadow cast by his mysterious uncle. The haunting presence of this absentee uncle was riveting and the sinister mentions of this ghostly character fairly shouted “bad guy” and built my anticipation at meeting this control-monster-dude in the next book.

While the opening premise of this first book is fairly simple: hot, ripped, no-name fighter hires no-experience young college student to be his publicist, the well-researched content married to a rich, straightforward storytelling style makes for a captivating and fast-paced romance that holds an abundance of testosterone, mystique, and shouldering zeal. To say the story mounts in intensity and anticipation like Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ is putting it mildly. Rampant teasing and tempting interludes were both playful and heart thumping, but pay off in some of the most scrumptious, visceral, and scorching sex that I’ve read in a while. And major love for the physique of Kage, all that ropy muscle, restricted diet-daily trained, gleaming, brown skin coupled with the chocolate-caramel hair, golden-green eyes, and strong-jawed Latin heritage face, had me in visual “eye candy” heaven, a big plus for any reader.

Jeepers, what more can I say…looking for a great ride into the land of men, martial arts and romance? I recommend KAGE, a Bentley smooth ride into the rough and tumble world of cage fighting and love…with major perks. Thank you Maris Black… for getting it oh so right…you know I want to draw me some Kage.

“Innocence, Brawn, and Sizzle…Get ready to Rumble in all the best ways!”
