I love Kev's books. He includes so much information, including historical background with plenty of real world examples in different keys, with amazing graphics. For visual learners, this book is spot on. The included cd with backing tracks makes practice time enjoyable and promotes faster learning. Might be better for those who aren't absolute beginners. Kev has others books for getting started. For those wanting to get started learning blues licks and searching for a starting point, with book will have you quickly up and jammimg.

It's not a diet, it is a new lifestyle

I've been doing the Gracie family's style of jiu jitsu for many years. Because of the intensity of the exercise, I was usually able to keep my weight in check in spite of my bad diet. While dealing with an injury that left me unable to do jiu jitsu for a while, my weight ballooned. That is when I decided to try the Gracie diet.

In this book, Rorion Gracie has done a nice job of explaining the full diet and its underlying philosophy. As a scientist, I find the lack of scientific evidence troublesome, but as someone who has trained with several members of the Gracie family over the years, I acknowledge that this diet has been "proven" in a different way. The Gracie family ages well. They manage to stay in amazing shape into their later years, and it is hard to attribute all of this to exercise alone.

I've been on the diet for four months. I have taken off more than 30 pounds. It has also had some remarkable side effects. First, I have struggled with stomach problems for my whole adult life, and they have largely disappeared since going on the Gracie diet. Second, the borderline high blood pressure I have had for many years has plummeted. I am also just starting to round the bend toward internalizing the Gracie lifestyle. The food commercials that used to make me salivate are now starting to turn my stomach. I get this oddly high feeling going through the grocery line with a cart full of fruits and vegetables while everyone else is buying processed crap food. I have internalized the feeling that my body is a place worth protecting and I don't want to poison it with the foods I've been eating my whole life.

This presents some unique challenges. I travel a lot for work and in some places it is impossible to stay on the diet. I have one particularly frustrating memory of walking endlessly through the streets of Springfield, Illinois looking for fruit because the hotel restaurant served only junk food. My mealtimes no longer line up with anyone else's, which can be a logistical challenge with family, friends, and colleagues. Also, some cultures place a lot of value in food and get their feelings hurt when you won't eat what they are offering. So yes, there are many challenges.

At the same time, my young daughter now begs for "banana ice cream" (frozen bananas run through the food processor) like it is some type of forbidden treat (a tip from Rorion). My teenage son now shares my breakfast of pureed grapes, acai berries, and coconut. In other words, my turn toward a healthier life is now infecting my whole family. So I've been able to share this wonderful adventure and I feel like I have barely gotten started.

I recommend buying this book, but as a supplement, make sure to check the web page for the Gracie diet. I use a lot of the recipes in the videos, and also learned some new skills, like how to open avocados, coconuts, and madjool dates.

Spooky Green Ghost Haunts His House!

Quite a few children's mystery book series have become classics. Most people are familiar with Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and Tom Swift. Even the Boxcar Children are relatively well-known. However, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators were well-written books that offered an intelligent, interesting and more contemporary alternative to many of the earlier classic series. Many people recall the earlier series well, but the Three Investigators series, which Robert Arthur wrote and debuted in 1964, has, for now, largely been overshadowed by the other series and generally forgotten. Fortunately, all of these books are available either from Amazon or from other internet sources.

This book is the fourth book in the series, following "The Mystery of the Whispering Mummy" and preceding "The Mystery of the Vanishing Treasure." This mystery begins almost immediately as the Three Investigators learn that a green-colored ghost has suddenly appeared in a variety of locations, beginning with the abandoned Mathias Green mansion and ending at a vineyard in northern California.

Soon the Three Investigators find themselves tangling with a mysterious Chinese man claiming to be more than 100-years-old, along with an array of thugs. What is everyone after? They are after an incredibly valuable piece of jewelry that could mean life to the person who possesses it. Someone understands the value, because the Three Investigators are threatened with death!

I enjoyed this Three Investigators novel. There are portions of the book that are relatively easy to figure out, but there are other portions that had to await the end of the book to figure out. The addition of the mysterious Chinese man is the most bizarre event yet in this series of stories. What the Chinese man intends on doing with the jewelry is even more bizarre. This story also had a lot of complexity and subtlety that I thought the author, Robert Arthur, constructed well.

If you are looking for mystery books for children and you are looking for an alternative to the stories I listed earlier, I highly recommend the Three Investigator series. I do recommend starting with the first book in the series, which is an excellent introduction to this series.
